THE KINGDOM OF SAND
The route of the first edition of the Dakar in Saudi Arabia explores the vast expanses of the largest country in the Middle East. The drivers and crews will be facing a total of 7,500 km, including 5,000 km of specials, five of them longer than 450 km. Fernando Alonso takes maiden rally-raid podium ahead of Dakar 2020

Team principal Glyn Hall pointed out that the strategy for the event was influenced by the fact Alonso was giving the chassis he will use for the Dakar itself its début.

"Fernando and Marc showed great pace this week, and I'm happy that they are progressing according to our plan," he said.

"We had a strategy for this race, and it worked out perfectly for them.

"They raced a brand-new car here, which is earmarked for the Dakar Rally, so they had to balance their pace with the need to preserve the car.

Why did they left south America? Does anyone know.

Cost of hosting it.

The number of South American nations willing to host and finance it dwindled down to one (Peru).

2020 Dakar Rally Routes and Rule Changes Revealed

The final route of the 2020 Dakar Rally, which will start in Jeddah and conclude 12 stages later near the Saudi capital of Riyadh, has been announced. This is the first time that the Dakar will start in the Middle East with Saudi Arabia having signed a five-year deal to host the gruelling race. The change in continent will also come with rule changes in an effort to even the playing field among professional and amateur racers alike.

New colour-coded road books will be handed out just minutes prior to the start of the timed sector on several stages to help rebalance the competition in favour of the amateur entries. Previously, when roadmaps were handed out early, larger teams were able to gain a significant advantage with multiple individuals processing the details.

Rallying-Ogier replaces Tanak in all-new Toyota lineup for 2020

Nov 27 (Reuters) - Six-times rally world champion Sebastien Ogier will race for Toyota next season in an all-new driver lineup after the departure of 2019 title winner Ott Tanak.

The 35-year-old Frenchman, who competed with Citroen this season, will join Welsh driver Elfyn Evans and 19-year-old Finnish rookie Kalle Rovanpera at the team based in Cologne, Germany.

Ogier won six titles in succession before Estonian Tanak, who has moved to new champions Hyundai, secured this year's title.
"We know how strong Sebastien is and we're all looking forward to working with him and (co-driver) Julien (Ingrassia)," said team boss Tommi Makinen, a retired four-times world champion.

"I think that being able to attract a driver with his record says a lot about what we have achieved in such a short space of time with this team."
Ogier had discussed joining Toyota at the end of 2016, when he ended up leaving Volkswagen for M-Sport Ford, and said he felt 'overwhelmed' at the prospect of working with boyhood idol Makinen.

Dakar2020 with 11 Portuguese entries

The 2020 Dakar off-road rally will have 11 Portuguese participants and will be held for the first time in Saudi Arabia, with 75 percent of the course on the sand.
DRace distance is 7856km, more than 5,000 of them timed, with 70 percent in the desert.

There are 11 Portuguese enrolled, with six on motorcycles, three in cars, one in SSV and one in trucks.
Paulo Gonçalves (Hero) is once again the head of the Portuguese fleet. The Esposende driver, runner-up in 2015, left Honda after this year’s Dakar and now, with the number 8, teams with brother-in-law Joaquim Rodrigues Jr., who will have the number 27.

Mário Patrão remains in the KTM team, with number 31, while the Portuguese-German Sebastian Bühler (KTM) is 32. Fausto Mota Husqvarna runs with 38, while António Maio is 53 on his Yamaha.

In the cars, navigator Filipe Palmeiro teams with Russian driver Boris Garafulic (Mini number 313), in a race that marks the debut of the brothers Porém, Ricardo and Manuel, in this category with an official Borgward (332).
Pedro Bianchi Silver lines up as navigator for the Zimbabwe rally driver Conrad Rautenbach (PH Sport) in the SSV category (number 404), while José Martins lines up with a DAF truck (548).
Dakar 2020 starts on 5 January in Jeddah, with a stage o
f 752km, 319 of them timed.
On the 11th, the riders will rest after facing a super-marathon stage, in which motorcycle riders will have only 10 minutes to repair their bikes.
The longest stage will be on 14 January between Wadi Al-Dawasir and Haradh, at 891km.
The organisation say the rally is less physically demanding, but more difficult in terms of navigation.

Dakar Rally – Jan. 5-17, 2020

The Dakar Rally will start in the Middle East for the first time next year with Saudi Arabia having signed a five-year deal to host the prestigious race. Since 2009, the event had been relocated to South America, following terrorists threats that forced cancellation of the 2008 Rally running through Africa.
The varied landscapes of the 30th country to host the Dakar have all the ingredients for a well-rounded route with 1.4 million square miles of desert as well as the Asir mountain range. A wide range of challenges will color the rally, including canyons, dunes, mountains, wadis and more. The terrain is expected to put Dakar competitors through their paces on all fronts: driving and riding, navigation and endurance.

“Africa, South America… and now Asia. Here, in the largest state in the region, we can let our imagination run riot with the infinite possibilities for a tough, balanced and varied course. The sporting challenge that we are putting together for the 42nd edition will tap the full potential of this vast country and its mosaic of deserts, mountains, canyons, valleys and coastal landscapes,” said Dakar director, David Castera.

With an overall distance close to 7,900km, the competitors will battle over 5,000km of special stages. In addition to discovering the Saudi Arabian dunes, which will be featured in the second-half of the rally, the first-half of the Dakar will take racers through a labyrinth of tracks where navigation skills will be essential. The new roadbooks and the new marathon stages introduced will help reduce the gaps between the big teams and amateurs.

Tacita will debut its 2020 T-Race Rally electric motorcycle at the Dakar

Italian electric motorcycle manufacturer Tacita is preparing to launch a new rally-focused bike in early January – and has just announced that it'll take the T-Race Rally out for a public debut at the world's greatest and most historic rally event.

The bikes will be officially unveiled on the 4th of January, at the Dakar podium in Jeddah, and they'll follow the Dakar circus as a display, with its solar-powered trailer, through the rally until the final day, in which "the Tacita T-Race Rally 2020 will join the full field of competitors at the 'Qiddiyah Grand Prix' to make his first Dakar debut."

The Dakar, of course, will be in the scorched wastelands of Saudi Arabia this year, with more than 75 percent of the rally over sand – "all types of sand," the organizers promise to those who worry it might get a bit samey. The final stage will roll into Qiddiyah, a giant sports and leisure district outside Riyadh that is yet to be built, far as we can tell, with a scheduled opening in 2022/23.
