Dan Tshanda has died

Go into some township or village ask people there about Jimi Hendrix, you will be met mostly with blank stares, most MyBb posters not knowing someone is not a measure of anything, some of you guys were here with te usual "never heard of him" when HHP died, Prokid and many others.

100%...

Different musical tastes and cultures.

Durban gets concerts, but the majority of them are not to my taste or artists I have heard of.. but the venues sell out quickly for them.

Thomas Chauke is a legend among the Shangaan community and their music, I bet you have never heard of him?
The point made by myself and other poster here is that the importance of people are being overstated. Maybe even my mention of Jimi. How do we define legend status? Known by 1000 people, 1 000 000 people, billion? Legend in a certain community is not legend. Important and important influence maybe, but not legend in the context.

Then again, looking at the definition of the word, “an unverifiable story”, maybe I am in the wrong here.

The article says "South African music legend". Hendrix and Mercury are probably legends in the music industry with worldwide reach in the genres (and maybe beyond) they represent(ed). I myself have seen their names & think Hendrix is supposed to be a great guitar player iirc, but can't say I know a single song by either of them. Not knowing a person is sometimes a choice in how you only limit yourself to only those within your defined microcosm.

Point still is, if he was such a legend, then more than 4 people on MyBB would know him. This seems to not be the case.

As for generalizing about microcosms, don’t. You might embarras yourself. I own weird stuff like Lazarus Kgagudi, and not a digital download, but the vinyl. I can share my Discogs collection so you can see the diversity. Yes, you can go Google Lazarus now.

Please don't tell me you have not heard of the Great Pretender?

And I wasn't implying that's the reason you don't know. I myself am not exactly abreast of SA's music (especially these days), but I remember hearing his name somewhere years ago when still younger.

Is that a nickname or name of a song? No, I haven't. I have never heard a song by Elvis either even though he's supposed to have been the King of Rock 'n Roll or something. Okay, I heard jailhouse rock but it was a rendition by those two guys who dance funny. I doubt music so old would appeal to me.

I don't know know any SA artist who managed to produce anywhere near 65 albums like this guy did, that's legendary for me. And you will be hard pressed to find any SA act from the 80s that is still producing music and is popular throughout Southern Africa.
