Interesting...his son, the famous actor Hlomla, is a big Cope youth (dunno what they call their youth division) mouthpiece. I remember he had a face-off with a rep from the ANCYL on radio just before the official launch. Was funny :D

If the ANC was smart they'd spot the easy nepotism line and use it for their campaign...but intelligence is counter-revolutionary for tha ANC as we all know.

This surely indicates clear and open policies.

They had a vote and he won. Clear cut and simple, if all it's shows transparency and I like it.

Curious about how this affects the whole separation of church and state thing.

If this will be the official result, lets see if Lekota and Shilowa are as real as they want us to believe. There might just be another breakaway party soon.

Interesting. Will he accept the nomination though?

I'm really interested now to see how things work out, if the reports turn out to be true, considering the source.

He has apparently resigned already so it's likely that he has accepted.

STATEMENT ON THE RESIGNATION OF REVD. DR. MVUME DANDALA

The Office of the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church of Southern Africa (MCSA) today, 16 February 2009, received and acknowledged with regret a notice of resignation from ministry by the Reverend Dr. Mvume Dandala.

The Reverend Dandala has served the MCSA with distinction for many years as an ordained clergy person and from 1998 to 2003 as its Presiding Bishop. Dr. Dandala has also served the ecumenical movement first as the President of the South African Council of Churches and more recently the All Africa Conference of Churches as its General Secretary.

Dr. Dandala has sought counsel from many senior leaders within the Church and has wrestled with his decision to enter into the political arena as a full time politician.

While the MCSA believes that the Lordship of Jesus Christ extends to all of life, including political, social and economic areas of our existence such Lordship also obliges Clergy to "examine their consciences whether to be seen to be members of any political party."

Accordingly, we have no doubt about Dr. Dandala's sincerity and ability to pursue a political career and recognize his Constitutional right to engage the political arena with his faith convictions.

While we respect and understand Dr Dandala's decision to join the newly established political party, we wish to state categorically that the MCSA remains nonpartisan to party politics.

Issued by:

Bishop Ivan M Abrahams
Presiding Bishop

It's a good choice by COPE since he has no political baggage and he has struggle credentials plus he is well respected. He is basically the Anti-Zuma :D

Ya quite an interesting one I must say. On whether he can lead COPE of a satisfactory victory remains to be seen. There are plenty of 'leaders' within COPE with a lot of political experience and educations, wonder how they will react to this one.

Remember, he will only be the boat in this cenario. The Boat still has a captain ;) Nothing changes, the COPE leaders will still be the driving force of the candidate.

I'm not sure I follow. Nepotism is not an issue here...

How did the other parties choose their candidates if it wasn't through the process of nomination?
