Well I just did a quick logon to DAoC for those who play and I was crusing with very little to no lag on the UK servers. So for all the DAOC players who were wondering - it works well for us :)

If I'm not mistaken it's an MMPORPG called Dark Ages of Camelot. (massive multiplayer online roleplaying game)

Can't ping the servers themselves. They don't answer. But if I ping www.camelotherald.com, which is at the same place (for US servers), i get roughly 350 - 380ms.

Significant improvement over ADSL.

Us poor sods who dont have credits cards cant access the DAOC's, Ultima's and Anarchy Online's, unfortunately - and there dont seem to be any local shards for any online games..

but for what its worth - if anyone's interested in seeing what an online 'persistent' world is like.. there's an initially free online world called Entropia which can be downloaded, installed and you can go amble around in the 2500km+ land surface - kind've a big d/l though - 510megs - But you can sign up and go in for free and look around and maybe beg for credits in some way in order to start building up weaponry and/or skills.. (concept is basically a new world colony, being set up)
Its available at http://www.project-entropia.com/

If anyone knows of any other online persistent worlds that the no credit-card brigade can d/load and get in for free, at least to look around, yell :)

ps - partly in answer to my own question - but here's a page with a selection of 'download and try for free for a week or so' online worlds - http://www.ogaming.com/content/main-freetrials.php
Trouble is the schlep of d/loading a damn gig of stuff just for a week's worth of snooping..
Any other worlds available? (I know World of Warcraft is around, but as far as I know currently its only a hacked version which lets you play in 'the sandbox' area, hardly useful)

Sign up with 20twenty or Icanonline or whatever; it's really not that hard to get a credit card, even if you don't want/need a line of credit attached to it.

LoneGunman, there is a free online shard for ultima online, much more fun than the normal OSI shards

goto http://tfr.sybaweb.co.za for more info, I forget their web address...
they play with the new AoS software....

see you on the shard ;)

Cool, appreciate the feedback LordZorg. If more folks could post positive experiences like this about other online games as well. MyWireless is looking better everyday. Gamers will very soon all jump on the bandwagon.

Spotted a download of Dark Age of Camelot, linked to a freeserver, out of Germany from the looks of it -
you'll need Bit Torrent for the download, and the d/l url (324megs)

the free server/shard -

Hey there.

I am currently downloading Rubies of Eventide. They give 10 days free trial. 500MB download. (http://www.rubiesofeventide.com/)

Don't know too much about it except that it is an MMORPG. Wanted to use it as a test, and to have a look around.

My two brothers are both playing Everquest, one of them on MyWireless and the other on ISDN. MyWireless seem to have better ping times (US east coast servers) and a better playing experience overall than the ISDN connection. They play together to the same server.

Spotted what looks like a working Ultima Online 'starter kit' - along with a link to a free server, again, Bit Torrent is needed to grab it.

That is illegal. I believe it is against the site's AUP.

Which is illegal? seeing and reporting on a download of Dark Age of Camelot? Mention of a free server operating out of Germany? (Its not a 'cracked version' download, therefore its not a pirated version - it would still require a valid CD key..)
Also - copies of the Daoc program are not sold locally, so this is a simple route for folks who might sign up legally thereafter, to actually get hold of the initial setup program.

Either way, thanks for being on the ball and spotting a transgression of the sites AUP rules, and really putting me right.

Its great that there are folks who're willing to do this on behalf of both the site and software manufacturers worldwide.

Its important that there are folks around who'll take the time to point out where the moral, legal and ethical lines are for everyone else, in case of confusion.

Naturally I wouldnt want to cause any problems for this site.

Thanks again for pinpointing a problem..

:)

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Saw this older post, and if anyone is still interested, there is a small group of player run shards using the DOLserver emulator for DAoC.

http://www.daocportal.net

^^link for the launcher for most of the shards.

some of the server features include:

~ instant level 50 (max level)
~ fully customizable armor (skins, magic stats)
~ some servers integrate cross realm classes, such as a midgard race becoming an albion class i.e. Troll Mercenary

Good for the types of players who aren't really into the PvE/experience grind, although there are some player run shards that have mobs and item drops, with xp modifiers. :)

**edit**
If you dont have DAoC installed, you can download the trial version and not worry about having a credit card. There are shards located in both the US and Europe, lag really depends on how much money the player wants to dump into their server's connection :)
