Dark rings on new iMac 27" screen

Man I am peed off. Sat down at my iMac this evening and there in the top right corner there are these 4 rings, just sitting there.

Thought it was finger prints at first, but no its actually under the glass. Almost looks burnt or something.

This sucks! Seriously. Ive only had the machine about 2 months so its going back tomorrow. But I can just see the drama now. They won't swap it, so I will end up with a machine torn apart and the screen replaced I guess.

Fsk! For R17K I really didn't expect this.

Edit: I can also notice now there are some faint lines below the dots. After googling a bit I found the following site. Seems to a very common issue with the new iMac.

Don't voodoo yourself. Be positive. They might swap it out straight away and you'll be a happy customer. Just smile and wave :)

Yeah you are right. Must.be.positive.

I guess I am so used to companies saying "yeah no problem, your item will be repaired in 3 - 6 weeks"

Just googled around, and found a post from a guy with a 21" iMac with a similar issue, apparently it was caused by heat.

I am surprised to see how educated some chaps are. The dark patches you see on your screen have nothing to do with apple (or any other manufacturer for that matter). Ironically,people who worry a lot about their screens,stand a bigger chance to clean them more and this is when the problem "appears". What you are having is nothing als then the dreaded "pressure points". In other words you,or someone with intent or without, damaging the screen. People are used to tin old CRT's (pressure insensitive) and unknowingly they damage their pressure sensitive hitech screens. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do now. The damage is permanent and explicitly NOT covered by warranty. Next time NEVER leave your beloved item out of sight and warn the people around you NOT to touch the screen. It looks brilliant and people feel the urge to touch it. Is a human instinct. Yourself be very very carefull when cleaning it! Sorry for the bad news.

Wow you really don't have much of a clue what you are talking about do you? They are not pressure spots, I don't clean my screen, no one ever has access to my machine, so your theory doesn't hold. Sorry.

And for your info, I have researched this and it is a known issue with the iMac. Its in fact "burns" from the heat. But we will see what Apple have to say.
 
Burns from the heat? Which heat? From where? I expected you to not like my answer and I am really sorry for the bad news :( I really wished I could say something to favor you. You know,years ago when this technology was envisaged,I was one of many vehement critics of exactly this issue. Some less educated people were laughing at us and now . . . The public out there is used to the good old CRT's and do not realise how sensitive this new,hitech stuff is :( I sincerely hope you come right with your insurance or apple. BTW if you Google for Samsung, LG, Sony, etc. etc. you'll quickly see the "bigger picture", when it comes to flat panels and damages. Anyway,if it makes you feel better, I'll delete my previous post.

Have you ever seen an iMac screen? Touched one? Its a thick piece of solid glass. How on gods green earth is possible to damage the underneath of the screen without physically breaking the glass?

LOL. I've heard of guys taking the glass off the front of the screen and trying to clean it from underneath. Has helped some people with residue/dust or whatever build up that was the cause of the spots.. If that's the case with yours i'm not sure but worth thinking about.

He'll void the warranty won't he? The iMac is only 2 months old. I'd rather return it.

Yeah obviously would need to check up on that, i'm not 100% sure actually. The way the guy said it was that it was really easy to remove, no screws or anything. Wonder if it's "sealed" unit as such.
 
Yeah definitely not attempting that! lol

Taking it back just now, will see what they say.

I can't see how they would know that you removed the glass as it's not held in place by screws, glue, tape or anything like that. It's held in place by magnets. Removing the glass is piss easy, you just need a suction cup or two. Once removed you can properly clean the glass and the screen behind it.
