Anyone still using the first version of Boot Camp on a MacBook Pro are well advised to upgrade to the version 1.1 update. At the very least burn a new driver disk and install those. The update maps "fn-backspace" to "delete" and gets the isight to work.

I discovered the hard way that the infamous "three-finger salute" doesn't work on the MacBook Pro. The "delete" key doesn't work under windoze so there is no way to login if you join a domain - there just simply isn't a way to activate the login screen - unless you managed to remap "delete" to another key/key combination.

I'm really pissed at having to re-build my dual-boot setup.

What is wrong with OS X ??? ;).

Nuthang! It's just that the MacBook Pro keyboard layout is designed with one key for delete/backspace. Also in OS-X force-quit (the upgrade to ctrl-alt-del) is option-apple-esc.

I know that apple doesn't support boot camp, but considering you need to reboot windows so many times, I'm pretty surprised they didn't have delete mapped by default and only fixed the problem months later.

I am just puzzled why you would want to run XP on an Mac.

Cuz the rest of the PC world hasn't twigged that Vista 2.0 has already been released.:D

Seriously... I'm doing somework that requires using SQL db's in a windoze server setup, so I need to be able to use an equivalent system to the users.

So its dual boot or lug around my centrino as well. Since I spend about 95% of my time in OS X, its much easier to dual boot.

Bootcamp is still beta so I presume they're still working on it - unless they have something more impressive in mind for 10.5.

Does upgrading bootcamp necessitate that much extra work?

EDIT -it doesnt sound that complicate - does reality differ?http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

No, its not a lot of work, if you are running windows standalone and just upgrade the drivers.
But its a bugger to reload from scratch when you get locked out after joining a domain and find out that you can't login cuz u can't ctrl-alt-del!

BobJones, have you considered looking at Parallels Desktop (http://www.parallels.com)? It works like a charm for me (using Visio in the WinXP VM) No reboot required, and it is seriously fast!

Yeah, considered Parallels, but the price for bootcamp is right (free)

I've heard that there are a few niggly things with Parallels, like some key mapping stuff, as well as having to play around with memory allocations to get the best performance.

Can you create your VM's on external drives?

I pretty much don't use Visio anymore... I've found Omnigraffle which works just fine... u have to hunt around for stencils though.. but nothing too hectic.

If you use project then you really have to check out omniplan as well, still in beta, but pretty funky. I've found that Merlin is also good.

I just came across this and figured it could help

Thanks for the tips.

There are a couple of other alternatives as well, that work on some systems like opt-apple-esc and ctrl-alt-right-apple. Unfortunately none of these worked for me so I ended up having to re-install.
