I'm looking at getting a dash cam - had an accident a few years back where the other guy flat out lied to the cops, and it would have been nice to have some proof that he was lying (maybe not valid-in-court proof, but at least enough to convince my insurance company I was telling the truth).

I tried using my cellphone camera for a while, but it became too awkward to remember to switch on, then off again, and wipe the video... so it's time to get an actual dash cam.

I've seen a couple at takealot, but I don't really know where else to look - any suggestions for reliable websites?

I have also considered getting a dash cam could be a great help with the insurance companies.
Take a look at 4x4community got to online shop.

I was also just about to recommend the 4x4community website online store as a good option, the dashcam they have on there seems very decent,

That one does look good! A bit more than I was budgeting, but probably worth the extra, given all the good reviews.

Get the Mini 0806 Dashcam from http://dasho.co.za/shop/dasho-mini-dashcam.It has plenty of good reviews on this forum. You wont be disappointed ...

+1 for the Eagleye cam sold by 4x4 community.
I went from Anytek AT550 (which broke) to Eagleye V2+ (which got stolen) :(

The eagleye has 1080p, GPS etc etc... and the part that I loved the most is that there's no need to unplug the power cable when removing the device from your car.

I used to use the phone on the motorbike, using a NFC tag to start the camera when I put it in the cradle.

I'd be worried leaving the thing in the car, and if it's something you have to clip in and connect every time you go somewhere, it'll soon be lying in the cubbyhole un-used, just like my GPS.

Thats why i recommend the eagleye.
Power goes into the suction cup and then it has a modular clip for both mounting and providing power to the cam making it easy to clip on and off when needed. no need to plug in additional power cables.

Rather go with the Mini 0806 - It has better resolution (super fine HD 1296P resolution) + its a very discreet camera which mounts to the windscreen using double sided tape.Using a suction cup is just asking for thiefs to smash your windscreen and steal. Also there are multiple ways to power it up , either using a cigarette lighter or hardwired for a more permanent solution.

I bought this one from Takealot for R400 (actually R300 with a voucher) and I must say, it serves its purpose.

http://www.takealot.com/720p-hd-in-car-dvr-with-2-5-inch-lcd-display/PLID38677977.

It auto switches on and off with the cars ignition, it automatically records over the oldest video when the memory card is full and the video is decent enough(I can upload a sample if you would like). I also like the fold up screen and it sits nicely behind my rear view mirror.

The only thing issue is the advertised"IR lights" are pointless. The lights only have a range of like 30cm or so

This is what first caught my eye and made me think about getting dash cam - then I saw the other prices and assumed these must be junk. I do like having GPS tracking on the eagleye and mini 0806, though.... not sure if it's worth an extra R1.5k, but hey, it's bonus season coming up :D
