The article on IOL about metro pd (uhm, pigs) assaulting a motorist, is making me consider to buy one. Well that, and the idea of posting videos about idiot drivers, daily.

A nice little read from Arrive Alive on Dashboard Camera Recorders and Road Safety

anybody have one?

would you get one?

People in the comment section of IOL (yes, I know you should take everything you read in the comment section with a little salt, and sometimes tequila) say that are cheap, but the ones I find aren't really that cheap.

Esquire had several in the R900 to R1500 range last I checked.

There was one advertised on 4x4community.co.za , can't find the link now.

I bought a couple from China, not the best of quality but you can play around with them, because they send me the wrong ones and after fighting with them and i'm not getting a refund i am willing to sell them at cost for R400, please PM me if you are interested.

I would actually prefer some kinda 12v dvr that can take 4 or more cameras and then use several pinhole or bullet cams but no idea if such a device exists.

There is a Golf GTI that drives around with 4 x cameras, bullet cameras and they are on the roof, each pointed in one direction and then I assume linked to a DVR

I have one that is attached to my rear-view mirror. The only exciting pictures it has captured are drivers jumping red lights, causing a rear-end 2 cars in front. However, the driver confessed so I didn't get involved. It records on a 16Gb SD card in MP4 format

There is an hd dashcam at Esquire for R599 excl vat...

Yea, I want it to be more covert though, can see some cop ripping the cam out the car and destroying it to protect himself.
Basically want rear view (so likely under the car with lens coming out of bumper or in the ceiling pointing back), forward view (likely in the grill or inside the rear view mirror), in car view and another pointing out the driver door window with mic at drivers side and in the bonnet/front grill.

The Golf GTI is Metro Police cop car to scan license plates for unregistered cars or fine defaulters.

Their setup was very expensive R200000.

I'd only consider a dash cam if it can stream via wireless to a backup device hidden under the seat or in the boot.
The average South African cop will rip your camera out and destroy or confiscate it if he/she is up to no good and finds out you're filming him/her.

Do you know if you get dashcams/cams that can be hidden in front grill and back somewhere that can double as parking cams, that would be handy.

how practical is that setup. is if you have a headon collision the camera is useless. it has to be in the car surely?

Facepalm, good point.
Unless ofcourse it is recording to a hd in the car maybe? Just speculating here...
