I am at the end of my tether and hope I can find a solution here. I had a dashcam in my vehicle for many years. It was mounted to the windscreen with a double sided adhesive pad that came with the device. It stuck so well that I had to cut the mount off the windscreen with a razor blade when I got rid of the car.

The problem is now that I cannot seem to find any way to reliably stick this mount onto the windscreen in my new vehicle. I have tried every kind of double sided tape I could find, from the cheap crap to the name brand expensive stuff that's allegedly UV resistant and designed for outdoor use. None of them have successfully held up the dashcam for more than a few weeks at most before failing miserably.

As a last resort I forked out more than R100 for some Pratley Quickset adhesive which I was assured by the salesman and the suggested uses on the box is designed to permanently attach rearview mirrors to a windscreen. I followed the instructions perfectly and ensured that the surfaces were completely clean. I even left the mount overnight without the camera attached to give it the best chance to cure without any weight but it immediately came loose when I went to attach the camera the next morning.

Do you have any suggestions for a specific product you have used that will definitely work as I'm tired of wasting my money on false promises?

I believe you need to use similar product as used with the rear view mirror fixing. For the life of me I cannot recall the name, but will keep looking.

It's very thin double sided tape, with no sponge layer, specifically use on glass mounting. It's black and rather expensive. Maybe try an autoglass place - they'll definitely know the product; may even give you some for free.

You're probably thinking of this.

Or perhaps this.

I've bought at least two different brands of tape that are just like that. Thin, black, allegedly UV resistant and designed for mounting review mirrors and number plates... still no luck I'm starting to feel like the double sided tape manufacturers are just taking the piss.

I bought this exact Pattex tape, and similar ones branded Sellotape and Glue Devil. None of them did the job.
I used that exact pattex tape for my dash cam without issue.. is the adhesive dislodging from the mount or the glass..?

Make sure to use an alcohol wipe to clean the glass before mounting.

Both surfaces seem to be a problem. I use multiple strips of tape to ensure the whole surface of the mount is fully covered and each time it fails some strips remain stuck to the windscreen while others are left on the mount.

I do suspect that the plastic used for the mount might be the problem. I noticed that the Pratley Quickset had cured and stuck to the glass but on the mount it was still liquid and not sticky at all.

This still doesn't make sense to me though. Why would the OEM double sided tape have stuck to the mount just fine for years but nothing else I can buy seems to do the same job?

Question: which side is it failing and coming loose? The glass or the dashcam mount?

Were both sides absolutely clean and spotless before the tape was used - I've used the highest % isopropyl I can find to clean both sides a few times, and never had detaching issues.

Also, what does the dashcam mount look like?

I cleaned both sides with glass cleaner and also scraped the windshield with a razor blade to ensure any residue from previous attempts was completely removed.

The mount is basically just a round flat plastic disc.

Scuff the dash cam mount with some 120+ grit sand paper or steel wool if you don't have sand paper and then clean both the glass and mount with highest percentage isopropyl alcohol you can find.. apply tape while mount and glass are cool and the interior is cool as well, like evening hours..

The plot thickens... I followed the helpful suggestions of scuffing the plastic mount, cleaning the surfaces with alcohol and applying the mount in cool weather out of direct sunlight. Again both the Pratley quickset and the name brand double sided tapes failed almost immediately.

Then I came across a spare small double sided sticky pad that came with a cheap Chinese magnetic cellphone mount I bought a few years ago. It was way smaller than the dashcam mount surface but thought I'd give it a try since nothing else worked and this cellphone mount is still in place. This tiny sticky pad has held up the dashcam for weeks now without issue.

So the question remains. Why can I not seem to buy any double sided tape that works anymore? I recall using cheap tapes to stick things on walls in the past and having the opposite problem, being frustrated by how hard it was to remove the items later. I also visited someone who recently used double sided tape to stick very small, light picture frames to their walls which have now all fallen down. I'm beginning to think there is some double sided tape manufacturing conspiracy going on
