We need to develop a New way of working and presenting Data Sets. The tools that we use on the databases itself are SQL and SAS. Then we need a new and practical way of presenting data to Audit graphically. Currently, we test and work on the data, and then just give the results back on Excel with filters.
We've got an idea for a tool to view the data with, but I'd love some different ideas.

Hans Rosling's work (www.gapminder.org) is a great inspiration and idea.

Are there any other technologies and radical ideas on this?
The project will be done in C#, and anything else that is relevant.
 
Jip. Something like that. :) We're open and keen on developing our own version as well..
 
ProClarity had some nifty web interface the last time I saw their product, but AFAIK it's part of some Microsoft product suite now. Try contacting Harvey Jones to have a look at the products they have available.

Awesome stuff. :) It's still nothing that Excel can't do... I'm trying to think way outside the box for our core concept, and then add the standard charts and thingeys that the corporate environment needs. ;)
 
If you're really adventurous, how about a 3D interface using DirectX or OpenGL? Should be able to do some very cool visualisations in 3D :)

That was my thinking too... ;) But 3D will only become practical if you find the limits of what 2D can do. I'll start planning the full scope of the project today...
(This will mostly be run on IBM T61s, so I have the green light for impressive graphics)

Well, I don't have the full scope of the project yet. So, I'm open for ideas.
We do the Data mining part, so any new toys to do it is welcome, but the focus is on presenting the data to Audit, in a faster and more practical/meaningful way than just a spreadsheet and a few graphs... if that answers the question?
 
If you are interested our company provides a datamining tool that can transform data into nice formats and provides few other added functions. If you are perhaps interested you can PM me.
 
In visual studio you get intergrated bussiness services and part of that is reporting services, which links to an external data source e.g. SQL Database and from there you can freely design graphical reports aswell as automate them using a ssis package.

I think thats what you mean... well thats what i do anyway

SQL Server Reporting Services and INtergration Services. Have been on a training course on it sometime last year and hated it! The food was good though.
 
What? Is that the products / services the H-J have available, or is ProClarity now integrated into SSRS & SSIS?
 
I'll post whatever I find on this topic. But I still need to finish the project outline first, and then I need to motivate why the company should give me and upgrade from Visual Studio 2005 to 2008.

The way you interact with Gapminder still seems like the best way to go..

There's honestly not a big difference between 2005 and 2008. Most of the stuff in the SDK's that can be installed into 2005. WPF, WCF, Silverlight, etc, are all available as seperate downloads for 2005.

The only real difference in 2008 is .Net 3.0 & 3.5, with 2005 you only have 2.0
 
IMHO 2005 was alot more buggy 2008 seems alot more stable and alot more services are already intergrated i have both versions on my pc, but really only use 2008.
