My son will be in S.A. for around 6 months. He already has a phone, so I just need to get him a SIM with about 3GB and 150 minutes per month. Could you suggest a provider and the way to do this at a good price?

Afrihost. Either using a MTN prepaid SIM or get them to send you one.

R319pm for 120mins + 3Gb

Or R0.99c per minute and 1Gb free per month + R198 for 2Gb = R346.50. Data does roll over.

Edit: For 3Gb data per month you can actually get this free. You get 3 MTN prepaid SIM cards and put them on Afrihost. This gives you 1Gb free data per card that can be transferred between the SIM cards. The free 1Gb is valid for 3 months. So you only need to buy airtime. You can buy the airtime from any source as MTN handles the airtime. You can buy through Afrihost too. I have my debit card setup in the app and can top up at any time.

Over 6 months you will probably have to make a chargeable call or sms on the unused SIM's. On my gate motor SIM I have R5 airtime. Every month I have it send me an SMS (50c).
