Hi

Can a single fibre connection be used for both voice and data? We operate a small company which makes about 5-6 concurrent calls for most of the day. The network will also be used for emails, streaming (e.g. youtube,), cloud storage, etc.

Will a single 50/5 mb (or similar) be sufficient?
 
I would recommend making it symmetrical 50/50 in case you doing a large backup and maxing out your upload speed that will then cause issues with your phone calls.

Yes, a single fibre line can do voice and data simultanteously, because if you are using SIP VOIP then it is all data any way.

It depends on whether you are using a hosted PBX or an onsite PBX (software or hardware based). As a rule of thumb work on 32kbps per call for onsite PBX (the G729 codec is very light on bandwidth) and 64kbps on a hosted PBX per call.

I would use a Mikrotek or another device that can divide your traffic. Set aside 1Mbps up and down for calls and you should be fine.
 
Talked to a number of voip providers, but they not very helpful.

Euphoria and Switchtel can supply hosted pbx on ftth, but dont get involved in router setup, qos, etc. They dont guarantee quality of the voip and say it is up to the isp to setup qos. The isp's like CoolIdeas dont want to get involved in more than 1-2 voip lines, and say it is up to voip provider to install their routers and settings.

VOX dont want to install hosted pbx on ftth and say they only offer it on fttb. For ftth they are only allowed to offer single voip lines. The guy says it is technically possibly to do a similar setup on ftth as on fttb (vlans,etc), but they are not allowed to.

Any suggestions? I need to ensure quality calls ( 5 concurrent ) while using the same fibre line for data. Any suggestions on router model and setup.
 
Get a vibe router? Based upon Mikrotik hardware, creates a tunnel to the void provider and can do qos

Ping 41.221.0.33 and make sure it is under 60ms.

When you have call quality issues (which I can't think) then get a Mikrotik/Asus router and setup QoS.

Any suggestions on a specific router model? I need a new router in any case. I've heard the mikrotik is quite complicated to set up.
 
Check with some of the service providers, some of them have an offering where if you buy Fibre from them and you use their VoIP services you can get additional bandwidth dedicated for voice services. This way your voice and data is demarcated accordingly, the data portion is typically broadband while the voice interface is dedicated with QoS, etc.
 
You most certainly can use voice on that.

Need very little bandwidth for voice calls actually.
 
I run our company on a 20Mbps wireless link and use QOS on my firewall. We have 15 extensions and i have no call quality problems. I use VOX on my own inhouse PBX(crystal vox package on asterisk pbx). I really don't think you have to worry about voice quality on a 50/5 fibre link. With QOS you will be fine and without it you will probably also be fine. Go here http://www.nexus.co.za/voip/ and sign up a R25pm sip account to test if you want you can easily cancel once your happy. I only didn't use nexus isp as they dont port existing telkom numbers to their sip.
 
there was a time when I used to run a full 60 extensions setup with 15 concurrent calls over a 1mbps symetrical Diginet with Vibe optimization.

Euphoria should be able to help you. Switch tel are not really helpful, at least for me in the past. you can also contact connection telecom 'telviva'.
 
Do I realy need vibe? Only 5 concurrent calls on a 100meg line?

It's not so much that you won't be able to run that many concurrent calls over 100 meg, it's more about the fact that throwing all your traffic down one pipe with out any QoS or optimisation is a big dodgy, someone hits youtube or a torrent and your phones start breakign up and not working properly becuase the RTP and SDP packets are all mixed in with general internet.

I would if I was you, to have a decnet SIP exparience use a ViBE router and bond an LTE and your Fibre link together, that way the server will use the first packets to arrive, its the best way to mitagate risk of having any call quility issues. At the end of the day what is a good hassle free exparience worth to you? do you want to go through the rigmarole of moving to a hosted PBX porting numbers etc, only to find that you have call quality issues?

Dont get me wrong, hosted is great but it comes with a certian set of best practices and some of those are ensuring you have a second connection ready and waiting to take over. You could use a vanilla mikrotik, good fail over solution (sort of) but you will struggle when you loose connectivity on one link, you will need to flush your connection track and force the phones to reregister because the remote asterisk side will still think you are registered with the failed IP and send traffic to a black hole. There are solutions for this but they are vastly complicated and or expensive, you could use peplink but then you are in for a lot of money. Stick with ViBE, tried and tested.
 
You can use a 1Mb line for that it will be 100% fine. Just dedicate 1Mb to SIP traffic and all good to go.
