Data contract upgrade soon - do I move away from MTN?

Hello all

So this may well be tired conversation in these forums (if so I apologise and will willingly read any posts I'm directed to) but I'm at a loss as to what to do when my current MTN data contract comes up for an upgrade in a month.

To begin with, I have a 2GB contract for which I pay R130 per month. I routinely go over this and so should look at getting a 4GB or 5GB contract.

Question is, do I go for MTN, Vodacom, CellC or 8ta? I'm sure that moving from MTN would simply be swapping one evil for another but do you guys think there are better options out there?

I have been having endless problems with signal quality, ad hoc bundles, etc. But customer service is the same across all the operators I'm guessing, i.e. non existant?

I would prefer to stay mobile as I use the modem when I'm away quite a bit so that rules out ADSL...

So what's the verdict here?

TN

3GB for R130, are you sure?

Personally I would advice that you sign no contract but use a prepaid data deal. It's cheaper and you now have a modem which is not network locked

My apologies - 2GB. I've edited the original post! Thanks! :D

Towards the end of last year I had serious issues trying to get MTN to give me an ad hoc bundle - their system kept on kicking me off. Eventually it turned out that I was on an 'old' contract (it was an MTN Extended Data 2GB) for which I paid about R399 a month. They moved me to a 'new' contract (no upgrade) called a 2GB Broadband for R130 per month.

At the moment 8ta's Internet 5 promo and 60GB + 60GB specials are easily the best priced packages around. If you have reception, then this would be your obvious choice.

Based on the responses so far, it looks like 8ta is the way forward...

Speedster, I saw your post below mine in the "Cell C 5GB...." post and although those speeds are good enough for me, I am worried about the consistency. Seems like a lot of people are complaining about dropped connections and snailpace speeds.

Has your experience been that the speeds are consistently good?

Yes, my area seems to have good coverage so I haven't had any issues. Haven't had once disconnect in the month I've had it either. All in all I've been a happy 8ta bunny this past month.

k, thanks. Then its off to a 8ta / Telkom store on Friday to get myself a prepaid 2Gb + 1GB to test...

Thanks for the input.
