data recovery further options

Update regarding my recovery,

Still wants to recover his drive, did tell him if its that important than why is it not on cloud storage device with multiple copies.....
Says worried about hacking/security of his data.

Still wont tell me what's on it.....

Anyway says he knows somebody in the states who does recovery for the FBI,

Just curious if its this kroll center I keep hearing about,
And if there's any hope, that it can be recovered after a platter damage and head crash.....

Few people here say its impossible, but these days don't aircraft black boxes also use HDD's?

What do you do if the cause of peoples deaths is stored on a hdd?

Hmmm. Whatever is on there is not just his company database. Sounds fishy.

Contact a psychic :)

... seriously, if this guy knows a "guy" let him recover the data. You've done your best.

Yeah your right, its actually my first time ever sending to recovery, didn't expect this,

Thought they are able to get data back nonetheless, but even recovery has a limit......

Not sure who his Guy is though?

Who else does recovery for the us government or the nsa?
The FBI he specifically mentioned, but who could it possibly be?

I'm just curious, might just drop them a mail to confirm what everybody telling me very clearly....

All he said was its his only backup of something, what exactly not sure but he does work for a big bank so who knows......

I'd wipe my fingerprints off that drive before you send it back…

The guy's job is on the line. Of course he's gonna do everything he can to get it back.

Why doesn't your client get the FBI to investigate and find the original hdd that was stolen?

You're underestimating the ingenuity of the people and techniques involved. Once you have either 49 or 97 contiguous bits, it's a matter of a quick heuristic crunch applying the known firmware routines for the drive. Not only is it theoretically possible, it happens in practice. Of course if the magnetic film is physically destroyed then no recovery and reassembly of data is possible.

However, you'd be astonished what is actually possible. For example, it's in many cases possible to determine the prior state of a bit cell. Techniques have been developed using a scanning tunnelling microscope, and academic papers have been written showing how it is possible to recover over-written data. The real challenge is a practical one.
It can be scientific experiment to prove something, but when it comes to practical solutions, it looks completely different, as scientists create clinical case study and focus on solving one issue. Real world bring number of challenges, you are right on this one.
