How exactly does data recovery work?

I dropped my 1.5 TB external, if recovery was possible.. Do they charge based on the amount of data you want recovered or do they charge based on the actual size of the disk?

I was quoted just under R8 000.00 for 1.5TB. I only need 300gb of IMPORTANT data, do I really need to pay 8grand :(

They still have to go through the whole disk to find the 300GB of stuff you consider important, no?

Besides, how will they know what you consider important or not?

There will also be lots of data related to deleted files spanning most of the disk so they still effectively have to go through all of it.

Data recovery charges range from a few hundred rand to over 10,000. If you've dropped the drive the problem is most likely that the read/write heads are damaged. You also possibly damaged the platter. If this is the case then this requires a HSA (head stack assembly) swap. This is a very tricky job (especially with a multiple platter drive like yours) and needs to be performed in a 100% dust free environment. Expensive software is also needed for remapping the heads etc, hence the cost.

Is your drive spinning up, clicking, and then spinning down again?

Which province are you situated in?

Did you drop the drive while it was on or off?

What symptoms does it display?

IIRC they charge on what they recovered. If they have to replace platters etc then they charge more.
They dont charge if they dont recover.
Where are you based?
Data detect is usually pretty good

Exactly :)

Unless the motor is gone on the faulty drive then you wouldn't want to remove the platters. If any of the platters move out of alignment, even by a micron, pooof - there goes all your data forever. On a multi platter disk of course.

Platters do make good mirrors though - nice and shiny.
