Data terminology (HSDPA, WCDMA, UMTPS)

I may these terms wrong, but with me E220 software it swaps between HSDPA and WCDMA. Thing is HSDPA is slow and that's the preference nowadays. It always used to latch to the other!

My Acer Netbook swaps between HSDPA and UTMPS (or something). Again, HSDPA is the one it prefer nowadays and it's slow :/

What are these other terms - as I know GPRS, EDGE, 3G and HSDPA only?
 
OK...let me help you a bit :-)
GPRS - Slowest connection (normally indicated by a green light on your modem)
EDGE - (faster than GPRS and also indicated by green light - MAX speed is about 200kbps)
3G - (faster than EDGE and normally indicated by a dark blue light on modem - MAX out at about 300kbps)
HSDPA - (Fastest connection @ the moment. Normally indicated by a cyan light - Max out @ 3.6 or 7.2mbps, depending on your profile assigned by network)

The switching can be caused by cell breathing or other geological factors that is interefering with your signal strength. Try switching your modem to 3G only. It might still switch from HSDPA to 3G even on this profile. You will notice your light go from cyan to dark blue.

Switching from HSDPA when the connection is downloading to 3G when the connection is idle is normal.
 
So where the Mobile Partner displays HSDPA signal or WCDMA - I should notice no speed change?

They probably just display WCDMA when HSDPA is not active. Does it change to HSDPA when the connection is downloading and drop back to WCDMA when it is idle?
 
I haven't noticed when exactly (seemed random) - but I'm almost sure its slower on HSDPA ... I'll look into it though
 
This is very odd. I have always noticed a increase in speed when mine revs up to HSDPA. Seems your dongle had a few to many puffs of your stash dolby and is feeling a bit "backwards" :-)

GPRS ----> 1st Generation
EDGE ----> 2nd Generation
UMTS ----> 3rd Generation ( commonly known as 3G )

HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) ----> UMTS been given a Download boost from 384mbps to 1.8mbps and then 3.6mbps
HSUPA (High Speed Uplink Packet Access) ----> HSDPA been given an Upload boost
HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) ----> HSUPA and HSDPA combined and been given Upload and Download Speed increases
HSPA+ ---> Up to 56mbps in the downlink and 22mbps in the uplink for now.

LTE ----> 4th generation-supposedly (Over 300mbps Down and over 150mbps Up)

The Vodacom CEO added that all Vodacom HSDPA subscribers will be upgraded to 7.2 Mbps speeds, with plans to have the full Vodacom network 14.4 Mbps enabled for the World Cup. Uys said that around 100 sites will be 14.4 Mbps enabled by the end of March, but highlighted that transmission capacity remains a significant challenge in the rollout of these higher speeds.
