So I've had an iPhone for the past 20 Months, never had a data usage problem until last month...

Last month for some unknown reason my mobile data usage was 3GB, I got a bill for R6000 just on data...

WTF could have made this happen? I don't have any apps on it. My settings have stayed exactly the same. Still on iOS 5. MTN refuses to tell me what is the cause of the sudden data use..

Have any of you experienced a similar problem?

*Note, absolutely nothing on my phone has changed settings wise this year*

They cant refuse to tell you where the data usage went , i had the same issue 2 months ago R1800 1G , took them 2 weeks to send me the URL's seemed to be apple updates which i am not sure how it happened cause i usually update via itunes but i let it be as i may have went to the app store on my phone and somehow updated my apps.

If you have no apps then it seemed rather weird, call them again and demand the URL's for the downloads

It is mostly the large pictures attached to web pages. Some are monstrous (13mb each) and gobble up your data quickly. It is a conspiracy I tell you.

Install an app called "Onavo Extend". Not only does it try to compress/reduce bandwidth but it gives you a report on exactly what is using bandwidth.

The OP probably has a phone voice contract. And there's nothing wrong with a data contract, it's the only way you get good prices when you have no cell c or 8ta coverage. You must just manage your usage carefully.

It's not a data contract. This is on an iPhone 4 contract that comes with 150mb...

So all I've heard so far is that there is no way to tell what used 6GB of data on a phone in two months?

My guess would be... update all apps was pressed by accident, you tethered with you're PC by accident or your youtube usage has increased a lot.
But I suggest you call MTN and move you're contract over to top-up.
