Data usage options in Germany and UK

I'm off on some business to Germany and the UK and would love to make use of the mobile data facilities in these two countries. I just need some guidedance maybe from someone that have made use of these services in the past.

I used to use dial up at the hotels to VPN back to South Africa but this option also turned out to be quite expensive. I have found some information in the Vodafone UK site re the Pay as you talk service. I will purchase a Vodafone UK SIM when I get to the UK and it would seem that data costs are around GBP 4 per Mb. Is this correct?

A friend has given me a Vodafone Germany prepaid SIM and will try to use this SIM in Germany. I just can't find the pay as you talk data prices for Germany. Can anybody shed some light on this cost? I've had a look on the Vodafone Germany website but my German is very limited

I could always use my Vodacom SIM to roam, but the cost is prohibitive

Any suggestions, help, guidelines etc will be much appreciated!

From what I recall, GPRS costs were around R75mb last year. I used wireless hotspots mostly, where you pay by day. That worked out alot cheaper...
