Hi Folks, I notice my data usage spikes considerably when using my phone as a modem (usb direct & wifi ) , checked all the usual suspects(background data, updates, security etc.) Can anyone help clarify what's going on ?

When connected open resource monitor and look under "network - TCP connections".

And post your findings here.

Thanks for the interest. Here's a screenshot. Anything that shouldn't be running ?

1) Use the print screen button and paste the image into paint then make a screenshot from there

2) Run a virus scan, remove AVG and install Avast Free.

3) set windows updates to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

Post findings here.

AVG isn't the culprit, otherwise I'd have the same problem, which I don't.

That IP which is downloading at 44KB/s is in Italy, apparently. What are you downloading from there?

It could be anything from DropBox or other cloud syncing too. When they see a wifi connection it just goes crazy.

You should mark your wifi connection as a limited bandwith connection (Windows 8.x does think I think and OSX) so apps will treat it as a cellular connection.

AVG doesn't miss much, unlike Avast. And maybe it's a legit application, thus the question. Perhaps he knows of the application/download, but has no idea that it uses that much data.

I stopped reading after that.

Thanks for the help so far folks, will go and do my homework and report back. Italy ?... will check Kindle on pc for syncing as well. Don't use Dropbox...

+1, but that is just my experience.

OP, do you know what is running in the background on your laptop? Windows updates, adobe, java, etc.

@OP, did you watch any vids on your laptop?

Windows updates off, Updates (adobe & java etc set to "ask"). Didn't watch any vids...still scratching my head..
