Howsit guys

Been a while since I've been here on MyBroadband, been very busy of late. I'm sure some of you must've heard of ownCloud (http://www.owncloud.org). Well basically ownCloud is a cloud management system designed to give you universal access to your files, including music, bookmarks, contacts , news etc. through your server.

I was interested in ownCloud but I didn't take much of a liking to some parts of its interface. So I edited quite a few files and UI elements within ownCloud. In addition I added I tried to make the apps more responsive and a bit quicker. Eventually I produced a rebranded distribution of ownCloud, dubbed dataCloud (for now).

You can view a live demo of it here : http://susurus.com/datacloud/

Or if you want you can download the package from here : http://susurus.com/datacloud/public.php?service=files&t=36e0bb3b0ddaca09c92b65f5372beeb1 and try it out on your own server

Now I'm thinking of launching dataCloud as a service and I need your personal opinions here. If dataCloud was offered as a service with all apps included. Along with different pricing options as per amount of storage etc. and a free base option. Would you make use of dataCloud?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Also if you find any bugs or issues with dataCloud please inform me.

Thanks in advance,
Duff-Man

Hey Duff-Man

Cloud scripts are nice, but here are a few personal problems I have experienced in the past:

- Users are not interested in storing their personal, personal identifiable or valuable goods online.
- These services are flooded with spammers and criminals using their accounts to share huge, huge amounts of illegal digital goods, such as videos, music, etc., etc.
- Server storage are often a huge problem. A top of the range server, with 16TB disk space could be consumed within the first week. You will have a constant fight in ensuring expansion of your server and storage.
- These services could end up using Terrabytes of continuous data every minute. You could end up paying millions in bandwidth costs alone in a very short period of time.
- Over and above all the above, you will need to appoint fulltime personnel that will deal with legal issues, technical staff to work on servers, monitor user content, support for clients and much, much more.

Unless you start off with a good business plan, which will limit misuse, attract investors and generate good income, almost 99% of all these websites will die within a couple of months.

Hey House

Sorry for the late reply. One way of cutting down on storage and bandwith usage would be to create quota's for each user's cloud. For example a free user could have a quota of say 5GB of Storage and access to 100GB of Bandwidth (p/m). This wouldn't be too hard to implement as ownCloud already has built in quota functionality. Another added feature is that you can store files externally on Amazon S3, GoogleDocs, DropBox, Swift and other WebDAV servers or access files from external servers such as these.

You see dataCloud wouldn't just be a file storage application, we have DropBox and MediaFire for that. Instead dataCloud would be like a central hub for all of your important data. A central location where you can access everything that's important to you. Think of it like an office in the cloud. The hardest part I think would be attracting investors and partners, but if I can partner with various web hosting companies then a large portion of the start-up process would be accounted for.
