WhatsApp is an app, data usage is the same no matter the network. Remember that those adds don't cover media, so they're covering data cost of text.
My usage:
sent: 4618 / 88MB
received: 9939 / 33.3MB
Which is negligible, above is over nearly 2 years. Just visiting this page is 1.1MB, visiting the MyBB home page is over 2.5MB.
