Datsun Go! Thoughts

just because its cheap to fix and repair does not make it good.

coke cans are cheap to buy, but I wouldn't necessarily want my car to be made of them.

I take it NCAP rating stays the same? even with the addition of a (useless) airbag?

Very understandable yes, because you care about your car you are probably actually interested in driving. Most of the populace does not give a rats arse they just want to go to where they need to be as cheaply and with as few issues as possible, its this that make very simplistic and cheap vehicles so successful. Think of the Honda Super Cub, what an awful slow and ugly way to remove all the flesh from the front of your face around a corner, but they sold more than 100 Million of them, because people just want a thing to take them to places, that's it.

well skateboards and roller-blades are also popular ,
guess adding an electric motor and riding around that way can also work.

2018 Datsun Go facelift with CVT spied - Autocar India

New spy images of the Datsun Go hatchback have surfaced online, the highlight of which is the fact that the model for Indonesian markets will get the option of a CVT automatic transmission, along with the standard five-speed manual.

As seen in the spy images revealed earlier, the facelift gets a new-look front and rear bumper, tweaked front fog lamp mounts, a wider grille, new headlamps (from the Cross), new alloy wheels and indicators integrated in the outside mirrors.

However, the model spotted now wears a body kit that adds sportier front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a large rear spoiler.

In the cabin, little has changed, but the new model gets the Cross’ instrument panel and circular AC vents. However, the touchscreen infotainment system offered on the crossover is not expected to make it to the Go.

Powering the facelift will be the same 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that makes 68hp and 104Nm of torque.

The Japanese brand is expected to launch the refreshed Go in Indonesia early next month and bring the model to India later this year. The CVT automatic, however, is unlikely to make it to the India-spec model.

Datsun Go Automatic Review - CVT among the AMTs | First Drive | Autocar India

Datsun's maiden offerings, the Go and Go Plus may have had a lukewarm debut back in 2014, but the Japanese brand has been updating them to be more modern and desirable over the years.

The latest effort is the introduction of an automatic gearbox, and as an added feather in its cap, this is a CVT, not an AMT as its rivals offer.

This appears to be superior on paper, but is it so in practice? Gavin D'Souza drives the Go and Go+ automatic to find out.

Ciro's choice is the Suzuki Celerio - but he suggests you go for the higher GL spec instead of the base GA model - the GL is still cheaper than the entry-level Picanto.

Based on hired cars I've driven for a week or so at a time, I can safely say the Kwid is the worst car I've ever had the misfortune to drive (unfortunately twice), it feels like the whole car is held together with old rubber bands - it seems to wobble and flex as you drive around, the wheels feel like they are fighting each other as you turn a corner, the gear box is vague and wobbly - it's just not a nice car to drive at all IMO. It does not inspire confidence in any aspect of the car.

The Datsun Go is next worse. Not as bad as the Kwid, but not good. The car I had was new, with only a few k's on the clock, but the back seat did not fit, you could not lock the folding back up because the slot where the latch was did not align with the catch, the whole thing clanged and banged and shifted continuously as you drove. It was ok'ish to drive. Not terrible, but sluggish and vague.

The car I actually quite liked was the Suzuki Celerio, in fact, I enjoyed my week driving it around Cape Town. It was simple and nothing special, but its engine was crisp and lively, easy to drive around the city, could hold a decent speed on the highway. Handling was nothing special, but I never found myself disliking it. It's a cheap and cheerful car that just gets on with it. Plus the fuel consumption was really good. Every thing worked as well as I expected it to given that it's a small entry car. I think this is an ideal small cheap city car that will not cost much to own, but not be a pain either.
