Davies: B-BBEE does not impoverish whites

No white South African has been impoverished by the introduction of broad-based black economic empowerment (B-BBEE) policies, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said on Thursday.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question he said the policy was aimed at business.

"B-BBEE policy is not meant to impoverish white people, as it is a business imperative for companies to comply with B-BBEE in order to transform the economy."

For this reason, both black and white companies were required to contribute to the transformation of the economy through B-BBEE.

"Furthermore, there is no white person who is impoverished because of the introduction and effects of B-BBEE," Davies said.

The question was posed by Freedom Front MP Anton Alberts.

Alberts wanted to know if the minister had any research at his disposal to indicate whether any unintended effects had ensued or were still ensuing from the policy and whether he intended to order such research.

"There has never been any research to reflect the unintended consequences of the B-BBEE policy with regards to the impoverishment of white people," Davies said.

"In this regard the department will welcome such a study from the honourable member."

Seems like a spurious claim on the face of it, doesn't it?

B-BBEE have positive and negative points. Also numerous cases where enrichment happened by abusing the system etc. I have seen company policies where companies worked toward obtaining B-BBEE status within current capacity, thus they let go some people to be replaced. Also the very same policies being handed to… as per bribe… government contracts are a nasty place to be nested, but awarding to some.

I can say this, impoverishing whites with B-BBEE is only applicable to certain demographics (social groups within), some whites simply loves this system due to them being treated by government and other related developments.

it doesn't make white people LOSE jobs, it makes it harder for them to GET jobs, of course it improvishes them :p

Well, if white people are not impoverished despite being disadvantaged in business and employment circles, then maybe there's a lesson there. Something about determination and work ethic and value? I dunno... just saying...

This, I think it's poor implementation has negatively affected more across the race spectrum more than it's 'impoverished' one or two whites.

You are in fact stating your opinion, which you obviously pulled out of your own poophole, as fact.
