Durban - Local and international academics on Monday condemned attacks on a Durban informal settlement which claimed two lives and saw 30 shacks destroyed at the weekend.

"We note with concern the reports of the violent attacks on members of the Abahlali baseMjondolo Movement (ABM) in the Kennedy Road informal settlement," said academics in a joint statement.

Two people were fatally assaulted and stabbed, and scores were injured when about 40 men carrying assegais, knobkerries, spears and guns attacked them.

The politics that is being used to attack us is a politics of war.

Oh the ANC will get their war because its all they've wanted from day 1. Its the African way. They can run from it as much as they want but it always come back to one thing for an Africa, demand it and if you cannot get it, take it by force, they are pulled to this ideal like an insect to a light and the absolute mess and warzone that the rest of Africa is in now is testament to this. I'm just gonna /sit and /popcorn until they start their land grabs because its coming folks just wait for it :)

No report of the ANC , nothing . Pathetic , I tell you . Hate shall turn into hurt .

I have to agree with isede there. This is pure sensationalism. Reports don't say ANC did it. What happened to innocent 'til proven guilty?

We believe that this attack has been planned and organised by Gumede, from the Lacy Road settlement, who is the head of the Branch Executive Committee of the local ANC. There has never been political freedom in Lacy Road. Since 2005 we have been told that anyone wearing the red shirt of Abahlali baseMjondolo in Lacy Road will be killed.

Gumede, head of the local BEC of the ANC, has been trying by all means to undermine the movement for many years. He has failed. Every year we have open elections in Kennedy Road and ever year people vote for Abahlali baseMjondolo.

We believe that Gumede, with the support of ward councillor Yakoob Baig, has tried to build a coalition against the movement in order to attack it violently.

Dunno who this Gumede is.

SA failed to probe violence - Amnesty

South Africa has failed to investigate human rights abuses at the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban, Amnesty International said.

"Amnesty International deplores the continuing failure of the South African authorities to investigate impartially and fully human rights abuses which occurred during and after armed violence... last September," a statement said.

"This despite repeated calls since October for an independent and impartial commission of inquiry into the surrounding circumstances and extent of the violence and its aftermath."

Probably a case of political intolerance....."speculation on my part";)

This was exacly the reason why South Africa is on stage 6 of the genocide watch table out of 8. This happened years ago and was the reason for south africa to be pushed to level 6. The ANC might hide it but the international community is aware even if they dont admit it.
