Hi guys

So i'm thinking of hosting my own website. I'm under the impression that I need a fixed ip address so when people search for "[email protected]" they get directed to my fixed ip address which is my server pc which has my website....correct?

But i keep reading about DDNS, if I understand correctly, I dont need a fixed IP address as it automatically updates my dynamic ip address or something..

So whats the pros and cons of using DDNS? is it much cheaper?

thanks

Using dyndns.org you have a choice of your host with either a static or dynamic IP.

With a static IP you won't need to update it frequently, but with a dynamic IP you'll need to update it frequently as the IP changes.

Also, dynamic hostnames tend to expire when not in use for a long time.

Thanks birthday boy:)

I have been looking at getting a static IP address but they only seem to come with uncapped accounts!!!!!!! Is there a cheaper way to get a static IP?

All I hope for is Neotel to deliver a proper Ethernet device, a cheap uncapped account with static IP and I'll be happy :D

Why Do you want to host your own website. Rather use a Company Like Texo or Serv, you'll pay around R25 a month and they'll take care of everything.

If you hosting at home you'll need to make sure your server is online all the time, worry about power outages, phone line faults and the cost of bandwidth.

With Serv you get 12.5GB data transfer (bandwidth) & 1GB storage, with Texo you get 1GB storage and 8GB data transfer.

Yeah I was thinking of going with realwebspace..R9 per month is pretty cheap...But I just wanted the experience of hosting a website just for fun....but you right its quite a hassle lol

That R9 Package only has 100mb storage, rather go with texo or serv, you'll get 10 times the storage for around R15 more.

I'm also thinking of going with Texo one of these days - wife'll want to put her school up on the 'Net, and we'll need a good service provider.

Sure I can host it myself, but I won't be able to guarantee five nines :)
