My friends ibook g4 which he got 2nd hand began producing noise in the drive the other day and when he showed it to me I offered to try spinrite on it. Took quite a while to get the think opened and the drive out, I ran it overnite and says it will take 20 months to fix it. So, I guess he just needs a new one.

The make of drive that came out is Toshiba, so can any drive be put back? is there a best size GB for this type of mac?

Any standard drive should work - I've pulled so many different ones at varying times. He might enjoy having a faster drive in there as well as a larger one.

Speaking of spinrite I havent ordered it yet but my mothers hdd bombed last week so she's dhl'ing it to me - hopefully I'll have more luck than you did.
