So I got one of technical guys at work to change my CPU for me. Turns out I should've tried myself in the end :/

Anyway - he did the thermal paste etc etc and when we first booted up, it went to the Windows logo and froze. We rebooted a 2nd time and nothing ... zero on the screen.

Now it the fan spins but its still dead. Something obviously is dead ... and I'm guessing the mobo. The reason is that when I hold in the power button to turn off, it doesnt auto turn off.

Sounds like a mobo issue?

If you're sure the new cpu is compatible with the board, try starting up without the 4-pole (2 yellow / 2 black) connector plugged into the board near the cpu. If it starts, plug the connector in. You should see a nice blue short-circuit spark and everything go dead. The capacitors and / or mosfets near the cpu are history. The board is farked. Your original diagnosis is 100% correct.

Agree on the compatibility thing here..Id ignore the short and blue sparks thing though.

Specs of cpu and board ?

Yeah, yeah, OK, I know, sounds a bit drastic. It's just that I've found over the years most boards die as a result of bad psu's, or power surges. This usually manifests itself in a failure of the 12 volt capacitors and mosfets near the cpu, which are directly fed by the 4 pole yellow / black 12 volt extra power supply we've had since socket 478 / P4. They short and die. I've successfully rescued a couple of boards with swapovers from other boards, but not for clients - only on my own pc's. I wouldn't want to have to wear a warranty for work like that.

Successfully starting a suspect bad board without the 4 pole connected will usually isolate the board's problem to that part of the board circuitry.

Try it at your own risk though. :)

Just 3 more questions on this :

a) If the motherboard is fine - but no chip - and I press 'on', do I see anything on the screen? Biostar, stats etc etc?
b) If the CPU is fine, but the - but no chip - and I press 'on', do I see anything on the screen? Biostar, stats etc etc?
c) If I hold in the power button to turn it off, but it doesn't turn off automatically, does it mean the MB is gone? A friend told me that is the first sign
