Responded to a Mccarthy ad for a 2004 Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.6 with 89 000 KM going for R69 900. Went to view the vehicle and was told that besides the vehicle price there would be a R4500 warranty fee, and a R2850 "on the road" fee. I later requested a "offer to purchase" letter to send to my financer, they questioned why I wanted that and I said I want to see all the costs in writing. They eventually agreed to send me an invoice detailing everything. Financer said they couldn't finance at this price because the actual retail value of the vehicle was R56 000!
The dealership's invoice amounted to a total of R 78 450! Financer requested that the price be brought down by a combination of my deposit and elimination of extras.
These were the extras on the invoice:
Selling price: R59 900
On the road fee: R 2 850
Service and delivery charges: R2 000
CWA Warranties: R 3 700
Autocare Plus Paint Protection: R 3000
Smash & Grab: R3 500
Mags: R 3 500
Dealership was only willing to eliminate mags from this list and as a result my deposit couldn't bring down the price to retail price.
I find it ridiculous that these so called extras are being pushed down customers throats and they are not "optional" as they should be. I tried eliminating a lot of other costs by negotiating and the dealership wouldn't budge, they were only willing to give me +-R3 000 off. Naturally I walked away from the deal. My car search experience shows that virtually no dealership is willing to sell a car at purely retail price!
(Mind you retail price already has profit built-in.)
