Dealership issues

Hi all.

Just wanted to know if any of you have had any serious issues with motor dealerships and how you went about dealing with it.

Back in 2012 we traded in my dad's old baby BMW as a deposit on a brand new Trailblazer. Deal was done in early December with intent to pick up on 4 January 2013 so it could be registered as a 2013 model.

We first looked at the 2.8 turbo diesel. We were quite happy with it. With requested extras we were quoted roughly 380k. I was shocked at how low it was as the list price was closer to 420k if I'm not mistaken. I even queried it and was assured it was correct. Bank approved it instantly because it was such a good deal. A day later we get a call that the quote was in fact wrong. This is where I should have immediately cancelled the deal and went elsewhere. In fact the only reason I stayed with them was they were giving me about 7k more on the trade in than anybody else. (Yes I'm aware I could have probably held them to the incorrect quote)

With the news of the incorrect quote we settled on the 2.5 turbo diesel. Extras were :
Touch screen satnav system from Grid Electronics that I was assured would be considered factory fitted and carry the normal factory warranty.
Reverse camera.
Bonnet guard and windshields.
Front bull bar courtesy of the dealership.

I'm still waiting for the bull bar but that's another story ....

We were assured of a complete vehicle at pick up. We only got this 3 months later after much frustration.

Our personalised number plates took over 3 months to get transferred by the same incompetent sales lady who gave us the incorrect quote.

Numerous things went wrong with the car and every time it had to go sit there for 3 or 4 days. Not once were we given a courtesy car to use during this time. Other dealerships refused to touch their work.

They even broke off one of the panels while working on the car. When I made them fix it they stuck it up with 2 way tape and gave it back to me. I only found that out when I took it to another dealership to query it.

Last year I had an accident with my Corsa bakkie. They're the only GM I know of in Durban with a body shop so I sent it there expecting a high quality of work.

My bakkie sat stripped in pieces for over a month while their machines were broken. During this time repeated assurances were given to both me and my insurance company that the repair was progressing well. In the mean time my bakkie was gathering dust.

I specifically told them that the gearbox was damaged based on what I saw after my accident. They assured me all was fine. When the entire repair is done that's when they decide the gearbox links are damaged and have to be replaced. This caused another week of delays.
Complaint after complaint fell on deaf ears and nobody senior from management has gotten back to me. Yes they gave me a crappy Figo to use when my insurance bakkie had to be returned but that's not the point.

Car had to go back with issues on the camera and they're now insistent that it only has a 1 year warranty. Warranty period was one of the very specific things I queried before we took it as an extra. The car has been sitting there since Tuesday and it still isn't sorted out.

All in all stay away from Key Pinetown.

Has anyone had similar issues and how did you resolve them?

Well I solved my GM product problems by never buying another. But that was in 1984, and whilst I had the car I lived at the top of a hill, and the GM dealer was at the bottom, so it wasn't a big problem to coast down to them.

Now that's why you should have paid me a visit at Subaru Durban, and we wouldn't be having this conversation.... ;)

Jokes aside - not good at all.

What dealership are you talking about - Key Delta for both? What panel beater, and are we looking at two different cars here?

Given the time of year, I can understand the bull bar not being available, but it should have been sorted out within the month. As for personalised plates, I hate the bloody things, and yes, I had one set also over December/January that took 8 weeks, but the fault lies with PMB and not the poor sod trying to sort it out on the Dealership side. Personalised plates should be sorted out by the owner, and not the dealers, and then we might see fewer of them on the road.

Eventually I was quoting an extra R 4000 for P Plates, as they are not worth the hassle that the sales person has to go through. You spend many hours extra, hassling PMB and then finally collecting the plates, as UNIPLATE won't open up accounts, or deliver, as others do - just not worth it!

Dealership has a panel shop.

Vehicle purchased from them was the Trailblazer.

Vehicle sent for repairs was my Corsa bakkie.

What sort of trade in would you give me on a 2010 Lumina 6L V8 Auto sedan with 45000 on the clock?

Full service history. One owner. Car is in a good to very good condition. Ballpark figure.

I'm interested in a Scooby

So you don't think the Chev Sonic RS "warm hatch" is mildly interesting?

If I'm not mistaken I drove that in October last year on the test drive day. I think it's a 1.4 turbo or 1.6 turbo. Pretty sure it's the 1.4.

I made that thing cry on the runway at the old airport. My honest opinion is that it's over powered and the handling hasn't been upgraded to suit the extra power.

You still haven't got the bullbar after more than 2 years? :wtf:

Yup still no bull bar. I gave up asking after the first year. Apparently they made a custom one (the trailblazer had just launched and there weren't too many accessories) fitted it and sent it off to GMSA for approval. Still waiting lol.

It's a 1.4 T yup; 103kw & 200nm. Same motor used in many GM products; Mokka; Cruze; Astra etc

So the Sonic RS looks faster than it goes lol

Yep, washed my hands of GM about 5 years ago. The service levels of the Thorpe dealerships in Cape Town were putrid.

Ive had a week from hell thanks to Volvo in Boksburg. I spoke to Volvo SA and they only made excuses... Zero effort from them to keep the customer happy.

Surprised to hear this. Everything I've heard from Volvo owners is that the service is pretty good. What happened?

Car has 40k on the clock, leass than 2 years old. It broke down last week Friday, I couldn't get the car in gear. This was due to a cable that got damaged by battery acid (yet they are adamant the battery is fine). They eventually replaced the cable and clutch and they said they want to keep the car longer to fix the damage to the bodywork of the car caused by the acid (This was on Wednesday). On Thursday the turned around and refused to fix the damage to the bodywork of the car caused by the acid saying that I cannot prove the battery acid damage was from the battery (that lead to a fun argument).

Long story short I heard numerous times that the dealership is understaffed and they missed every singe deadline they committed to. They also refused to assist with a loan car (not sure if I am unreasonable with this but I was without a car for a week and would have liked some help from them in this regard). I dont see why they would shunt a client already unhappy with their service around and why they would not try to at least stick to the times they promised.

Anyway just grumpy and emotional over my car breaking down.
