Dear Halo haters . . .

My inevitable response ;)

I dont hate Halo, I never have.
What I do hate is people that follow blindly and talk without knowledge.
Yes Halo 3 is a brilliant game, Good graphics, Great Gameplay and an overall stellar experience. However, I do not believe that this is the best FPS ever, My main issue was that I dont think it deserved the hype and the fanatical and maniacle coverage that it recieved. People were swallowed up by a marketing machine.
Sure the game deserves praise, but I feel that too many have gone over the top which is potentially damaging to the gaming industry. How long can every new game which comes out score 10/10?

*checks outside for snow*

I agree.

These games have become more sophisticated, but I have yet to find an FPS that beats the original Doom for unadulterated addictive fun.

Which is my EXACT issue with Sony fanboys about the PS3. They dont see anything else around them and treat it like its the wholy grail most of the time.

You are spot on about Halo 3 though, but isnt the same hype present around Crysis, MGS4, FF13, Mass Effect and other upcoming games? At least Bioshock didnt disappoint!

@Abev

I also agree, this run of 10's is unsustainable, but the flaw is in the way games are scored. (I just posted about it on my blog) having a fixed number to represent the value of products that are perpetually evolving is a problem. Interestingly enough, I think it was the editor of Gamespot that said they don't score based on "quality" but rather on whether you should buy it or not - I agree, unfortunately not everyone sees it like that. So by that reckoning - yes - BioShock, Halo 3, OB, CoD4, ME are all "must have titles".

Having said that. Suck it up, Halo 3 is worth at the very least 90% and deserves it's place in history. ;) :p If Warhawk gets ~84(?) then undeniably Halo deserves way more than that.

Agreed there too.

I have! The original Wolfenstein 3D!!!! But yes, aside from nitpicking, I agree with you. But it could just be that we are getting jaded.

I think the damage was done long, long ago. Game reviews are all just to high now. Surely a decent but not excellent game should get 50% or 5/10 or whatever? I would think if we were using a normal distribution curve, about half of the games should score under 50%. How many games score under 50%? Hardly any. The distribution is all clustered up at around 80%. I think review sites and magazines are influenced far too much by the distriubtors / publishers nowadays. But not just in games. Films, books etc. etc.

Halo is certainly not worth 10/10. It's great fun but it's not jesus on toast. Same thing for the Harry Potter books. They are great fun, but actually mediocre in terms of litterature.

Well, what if it was just marketing that hooked people? They must have been damn good to get the number of people that bought it hooked on it, and furthermore, to log so many online playing hours that it has so far... Couldnt be the game, must be the marketing;)
