Dear reader, we're closing comments (IOL)

This whole disabling comments is ridiculous.

If there's racism and abuse, why the **** not have a moderator committed to removing these comments?
It's not that hard.

I haven't read a news24 article since they did that.

Besides, the only other reasons would be that the intelligence of the comments is more than that of the writers. It would also give the writers a chance to broaden their view in their writing.

Bad decisions.

Reddit already exists ;)

I stay WELL clear of /r/southafrica

I can see it in a dystopian future...

You have been banned from [-]/r/pyongyang[/-] /r/southafrica

Haha, you have been made a moderator at /r/pyongyang !

Bonus question: Can someone loop me in on what happened with DJ and what the issue is behind the comments being closed? I've missed out on A LOT.

When that bridge collapsed in Sandton some of the comments on IOL put paid to the idea of a "rainbow nation".

Well at least one good thing will come of this. We won't get to read the crap that people post when some disaster happens or someone kicks the bucket.

No more thank god comments either :D

Funny how some people feel entitled to comment sections in news sites.
Even more peculiar that some people don't! :) It shows that these people are happy to assume an undisputed 100% trust in the credibility/authenticity of those news sources (each to his own? lol). That said, our concern is not limited to news sites specifically, so that is a misrepresented and frankly quite short-sighted accusation. Rather, we believe that this is a general trend (a carefully orchestrated one) to stifle/silence critical public debate about sensitive or controversial state affairs more than anything, and so the censorship won't stop at news sites. Remember when Malema tried to threaten to close Twitter (*chuckle*)? Why do you think this was? ANY platform which gathers vast numbers of users who share a collective interest in upholding/exposing the truth at all costs, will be targeted in this kind of suppresive manner. Even ordinary discussion forums such as this one (where clearly you too seem to enjoy your ability to comment), are inevitably next on the blacklist. Funny how some people can't see much further than their own nose... I guess these people don't mind the notion of being the stringed zombie puppets of a controlling, communist state? ... Well again, each.to.his.own. You can freely succumb if you want - I on the other hand, won't. xD Viva Freedom!!

free_at_last.jpg
"Free from oppression at last. From here on out, we are all of equal dignity/worth, encouraged to express the diversity of our views freely in this land which we now declare a multicultural, democratic, Rainbow Nation."
Yeah right! Hoax of the century. More like "Shut your mouth, because really - whether you like it or not, ours is the only opinion that matters."

P.S.: Is someone going to call me racist/hateful now for posting a picture of Madiba ? Damn joke.... Morons! This is why we are the laughing stock of the world.

Now can I hear another "Thank You IOL for placing a muzzle over my mouth! I applaud this decision!" - Any takers????

If you still don't see the light, then I guess you deserve what's coming our way...

So, I agree on hate speech. It is jarring and unwelcome.

What frightens me is how easily it has become about anonymity, specifically the removal thereof.

I'm very concerned about the tendency of millennials to trade off freedom for a perceived protection from negative emotions.

It is just as repugnant as hate speech IMO, if not more so due to the apparent ease at which is can be used to make you upload you ID documents to Facebook for example.

That is not the Internet that I grew up in and it is anathema to the ideals that governed it.

For fun:

El-lip-sis

3 dots = 3 letter 'O's

Letter O = 15th letter

1+5 = 6

3 sixes = 666

this pattern is redundant (duplicated, as above, so below)

The upper ellipsis are round (protective magical circles, keeping the upper echelon safe), while the lower ellipsis are square, four-walled cells/prisons for the pirates and dissidents below (ie. the 'solution' linked via visual proximity)

Letter 'O' is a Ring. 3 rings for the Elven kings

The company ellipsis offers an "Update and Report Service to bring Clarity":

Tom Cruise (thought crime investigator) in Minority Report: "I just need a little Clarity" (while trying to score a drug by this name)

by visual obfuscation, 'sis' can be read as 616, and alternative to 666 as the Number of the Beast.

'sis', when voiced, sounds like 'sssssss'

El , the God (or a god), places his finger to his lips and says: 'ssshhhh'

Eli-psi-s = Psionic Regulation

....

Yeah, this is going to be interesting.

https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/3oxgbw/salman_rushdie_warns_of_new_dangers_to_free/

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Violence against writers and a misplaced sense of political correctness pose new dangers to freedom of speech in the West, writer Salman Rushdie said on Tuesday.

Rushdie, the subject of an {REDACTED} death threat in 1989 for his book "{REDACTED}", which was deemed blasphemous by many {CENSORED}, said he had not expected freedom of expression to come under attack again to this extent in the western world.
....
Rushdie told his audience that all people around the world could relate to stories, so limiting freedom of expression was not just censorship but an assault on human nature.

"It prevents us from being the kind of creatures that we are. It is not something which is specific to one culture. It is something universal to human beings," he said.

Many Years ago, I enjoyed the comment sections of IOL and News24...

Then it went south as mindless racist bigots who have no intention of moving their beautiful country in the right direction started their abuse.....

As much as I enjoyed some of the constructive debates..... the narrow minded folk ruined the experience for me.....

Everyone is entitled to voice their opinions but IOL is under no obligation to provide a platform to do so.
