Could South Africans soon be self-medicating legally with cannabis, or dagga as it is more commonly known? This could flow from the latest position statements of the Central Drug Authority (CDA).

In the SAMJ (South African Medical Journal) in June, CDA executive committee member Dr Dan Stein says the authority favours "decriminalisation rather than the legalisation of cannabis" for personal use. And in the SAMJ in September, Stein says the CDA also accepts that globally, alcohol causes more harm than cannabis.

It's not a medical argument. Never has been.

Legalise it anyway I say, no need to come with this "medical uses" excuse. I'm more worried about the gangs etc. that use marijuana as a means of funding and the negative impact they have on society than marijuana itself.

I just self medicated

Good stuff

Damn migrants committing crimes again.

Don't think the gangs that sell doobies are really the problem anyway, it's the hard core stuff that's really lucrative and problematic, crack/meth etc

One step at a time. Even so go try slinging dagga on somebody's turf and see what happens to you.

It's freely available, you'd be forgiven for thinking that it's been decriminalised for years.

May be so but some vigilante cops still take it seriously, if you get caught by the wrong cop with weed you will find yourself in very deep k4k!

The law is the law, till it changes be very aware of its consequences.

You're wrong. It is a problem...

Indoor grown marijuana costs R150-R200 per gram. Gangs in the marijuana industry are a huge problem.

Suppose that's true but it's still not in the league of the harder drugs, it's not like a coke head that will hoover through R3k a night and then want more.
