Debbie Schafer is the Democratic Alliance Shadow Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development.
Debbie was born in Pietermaritzburg and attended primary school in Johannesburg, before moving to Cape Town where she matriculated from Bergvliet High School in 1984.
She successfully achieved a BA degree at the University of Cape Town, majoring in English and Psychology and further graduated with an LLB, in 1990.
In 1993, Debbie was admitted as an attorney and conveyancer of the Cape High Court and successfully practised law for twelve years before entering the political arena.
Shortly after the birth of her twin daughters, and with the full support of her husband Mark, combined with the desire to turn her burning patriotism into concrete change, Debbie joined the Democratic Party in 1999.
In 2002, she responded to the call to duty by first winning the nomination, and then serving as councillor for Ward 62 (Constantia/Wynberg) until the next elections, where she also successfully stood in her neighbourhood Ward 73.
Debbie retained this position until her appointment to the National Assembly in Parliament in the 2009 elections.
Within the DA, Debbie currently serves as Deputy Chairperson of the Regional Executive in the City of Cape Town, is a member of the Provincial Disciplinary Committee and the Registrar of the DA Federal Legal Commission, as well as contributing her time and skills to the Provincial and Federal Councils.
