If you're on a cellphone contract and you have your own phone, instead of "upgrading" when the contract expires, just use your old phone and say you'll "upgrade" without a phone. Also put yourself on Prepaid "contact" where they load x amount of Rands on your phone each month for Rx price. I'm on R200 airtime a month and it costs me R73.

Also try and see if the service provider you're using has an affiliate/referral program, so that when you refer your friends to their services, you get a kick back (I think DSTV has one like that where you get a month free DSTV for every friend you refer or something)

Always ask for discount, if you can't get discount, go shop at another shop. Saved myself R650 on clothes the last weekend. Edgars didn't wan't to give me a cash discount so I left all the stuff there and went to a smaller non-franchise shop and bought the same things there for much cheaper. Saved myself quite a bit of money by just asking for discount.

All I can think of right now, but there's loads of ways to save which you haven't even started to think about yet

Work out a meal plan for the week, and then make a shopping list for supplies. Only buy the stuff on your list. You don't really need the slabs of chocolate that are on promotion for R5.

Try and shop at Checkers/Pick 'n Pay, they are usually cheaper that Spar and Woolies.

Stop drinking Cokes and other fizzy drinks. Stick to water, or if you are really craving some fizz, consider a soda stream.

Don't ever get tempted into having a store card, no matter how many vouchers they offer when you sign up.

Stop with Takeaways/Meals out. They are a luxury. You can make the stuff at home for a fraction of the price.

Do your gardening/housework yourself

Get rid of DSTV.

Pay off the debt with the highest interest rate first. (ie Credit card)

Try organising a lift club, or requesting to work from home some days.

Take your own lunch to work. The amount of money people spend on food at a cafeteria can add up after a while, (although it may seem quite cheap)

Stop smoking.

:) K thats all I got for now.

RustyPrincess: You should look at the Spar & Woolies specials. Mince Meat at Woolies is R40kg. Spar is also cheaper with their meat than Checkers / PnP. But non-special items is where you need to avoid the upmarket places.

Cut back on luxuries is important, but you still need to treat yourself.

We stopped take-aways in our household yet we now eat out every week. Tonight is Spur Burger special, so with the little rugrat the bill will be less than R100 (you can take your own wine in for no corkage and little ones get a free cooldrink if you have a Spur Secret Tribe membership - which is free).

Could stay at home and make burgers myself but life is too short to keep it boring.

I just wrote tips to try and reduce expenses. Some people don't even realise what they spend money on.
Treating yourself is important :) But some people can't afford to (like the oke who doesn't want to live anymore)

I know people who constantly moan about how poor they are, whilst chain smoking through a carton (never mind just a box) of cigarettes a day. They don't even pay their rent some months, but they will always be smoking. You can always make lifestyle changes in order to keep a roof over your head, and that is what my suggestions were based on :)
