Debt-ridden Air Zimbabwe sacks half its workforce

Air Zimbabwe has laid off 200 employees - nearly half its workforce - to try to stay in the air, Zimbabwe state media reported Wednesday, as the country's economic troubles deepen.

Under long-time leader President Robert Mugabe, Zimbabwe has suffered mass unemployment, a collapse of many public services and banknote shortages as foreign investors have fled.

According to Bloomberg News, the southern African country's economy has halved since 2000.

"We have retrenched 200 employees out of the 424," Air Zimbabwe chairman Chipo Dyanda was quoted as saying in the Herald newspaper.

"The organisation is over-bloated."

I speak under correction, but I believe the figure I heard was somewhere around the R13bn thus far...or was that eskom...I forget, but it's definitely much more than R2.3bn.

If things don't change fast, we may as well replace "Air Zimbabwe" with "Air Zumabwe" AKA "SAA".

Not strictly accurate because the vast majority of black wealth since 1994 was taken from others who created it.

Since it's Zim that we're talking about......

Prior to that there was nothing because the inhabitants regarded cattle and women as wealth.

Look who's running the business

Zimbabwe's state-owned airline has laid off 200 workers, roughly half of its staff, with immediate effect.

The job losses are part of a turnaround strategy to bring struggling Air Zimbabwe back to profitability from a $300m (£230m) debt.

Last month the EU banned it from using its airspace, citing safety concerns.

There have been major changes at the national airline since President Robert Mugabe's son-in-law took over as chief operating officer last year.

I was actually quite surprised that they were only banned from European airspace so recently...
