Decaf - anyone here not on caffeine?

I stopped with the freshly ground beans and french press. Moved to Rooibos for a bit. But SO kept instant in the house, and I gradually started drinking her instant. So I moved from three or four cups of french press coffee to one cup of instant per day.

Mostly out of habit, I think I can do without caffeine.

French press :vomit:
Get an Aeropress and then see your coffee addiction suddenly take off.

Right, this is my moment to shine!

We build a tolerance for caffeine. Fortunately we can safely quit cold turkey, give it a week or two, and the caffeine sensitivity recovers for the most part. Might be worth a try.

Could also be that, like a good 1/3rd or so of the population, your mental health has taken a bit of a battering after the last two years. Speak to your doctor.

Also, how much do you sleep? The idea that lots of people don't need much sleep is largely a myth. Only a tiny handful (single digits per million) have the particular gene that allows that. The rest of us need a solid 8-9 hours, consistently, to be fully rested. This becomes more true as we get older (cruelly, along with falling a sleep and staying asleep becoming harder).

Lastly, just so you know: decaf is not caffeine free. It's more like 50%
May I ask where did you get the 50% number from? From almost every source I've checked, it's more like 95%-97% free but of course never 100%.

Indeed!

One of the reasons I want to quit, is that I get 8 hours of sleep but when I wake up I feel like I’ve been up all night. So then I need more coffee.

When I cut it out, I have much deeper sleep, but I still feel … physically and mentally impotent during the day. (Are you happy now @ShaunSA ?)

I’ll try cycling on and off caffeine as suggested but I wish I didn’t have to micro manage it like that. Would love to have all of the mental clarity and stamina without having to fuss about coffee.
Ever thought of doing Speed rather lol

No fancy gizmos for me; I am a purist.

(In seriousness, the quality of the coffee wasn’t a problem, it was that I wanted to cut back)

I don't remember - ha! I'm probably wrong on that, but it has *some* caffeine still, and I believe for beans it's higher (probably much higher) than for instant. I mean, some instant "coffee" barely has any coffee in it.

Well I've seen plenty of people in my career with full-on caffeine addictions, and have always been careful to not end up like them. A year ago I got a French press and started playing around with that, but I still limited myself to one mug of French press coffee a day. My heart rate has always been naturally high and recently I've noticed my blood pressure has been going uncomfortably (but not dangerously) high, and so while I know it's mostly due to my work stress I took the leap to go back to decaf coffee (Jacobs). Honestly it's not that bad *shrugs* Still tastes better than the cheap instant coffees, and after a few months on this I'll check if it's had any measurable improvement on my blood pressure. As for that work stress ... anyone got some decaf work for me?

According to this article in the US 97% of the caffeine has to have been removed to qualify as decaf and in the EU it's 99.9%.

Whats your work? Mines always needs tipper drivers, that's about as low stress as you can, especially an electric drive, don't even need to worry about revs, just keep the wheel on the road and don't crash plus crashing is not really your stress, it's the maintenance bakkie's stress

I was a coffee fiend in my 20's. Could have a cup of coffee and go to bed.

But when I was around 34 coffee started giving me anxiety issues. I cut it out for a while, and now I have coffee once or twice a day (before 12pm) without any issues.

Happened to a friend of mine too. His issue also went away after a time.

The local roaster does make a great decaf that I buy occasionally, but more often than not now, I have tea in the evening if I feel for a warm drink.

Yoh decaf is just sad muddy water. Coffee should be drank like Jebus intended, full of caffeine.

I drink around 4 to 5 cups of coffee a work day...I can drink a cup right before bed and still sleep like a baby.

Over weekends/off days I drink around 2 cups of coffee a day. I don't see myself ever quitting or going the decaf route.

Went from a cup or two of espresso every morning and every 2/3rd day another at lunch in early December, to pretty much cold turkey till beginning of this month, now just drink socially if I go out, so every 2/3 days or so a normal Verlängerter (espresso with water, Americano basically).

Mostly due to blood pressure, was a bit high for age and sport plus family predisposition, think it was also stress at the time though, back down to 125/65, so all good.

Never used it for studying though, think doing a bit of exercise beforehand will probably work out better in terms of getting blood pressure and heart rate a bit up.

Npe, Only baked, fermented Cherry pits for me.

Try pure Chicory.

People don't believe me, but it take a month or two break from coffee every year.
