Decent Car For R50k

Can anyone suggest a decent second hand car that would be reliable for roughly R50 000?
Got a citroen at the moment and it's going to cost an arm, a leg and possibly some other body part just to repair.
 
What are your needs?

2003/2004 Toyota Tazz
1997/1998 Toyota Corolla 160i GLE
1998 Honda Ballade
1999 - 2002 VW Jetta 3/4
 
Looking for something not older than 10 years, and if possible something I can do general work on myself like minor servicing.

Can't stand cars today with box engines that you can't do anything on - money making scheme from the dealers no doubt.
I have to send my car in to get something as simple as the lightbulbs replaced because it's too damn awkward to do it myself.

Then your only option is a Tazz, or 1.3/1.4 Golf mk1. Cars with fuel injection, in some way or other, is controlled by a ecu. (Excl Mechanical fuel injection of 1990's)

No offence dude, but on the servicing part not being able to change a light bulb, no matter how awkward it is, then it's not for you.
 
Corolla is your way to go buddy

Everything ont hat car is easy to change, and they last forever. Just drop a set of RSi twinspoke wheels and you have a good looking everyday car that will run you about for a long long time with minimal cost and pleasurable motoring!

I drive a BMW now, but I'd still choose a Toyota anyday because of the hassle free, peace of mind simplicity of it:)
 
Corsa bakkie or a normal corsa. I bought a 2003 corsa bakkie 95k km on the clock for R41k last year. Its major service cort me 2.5k and the replaced the clutch cable, cambelt, break discs and pads, oil filters and fanbelt. It is now on 110k km and it gets about 11 to 12km / litre and it still does 140km/h easily.
 
Ford fiesta mk5/mk6? Though i am biased and luv my mk6 to bits :D

If I can refurbish my own starter motor, do a full service etc on other cars no problem then it should just show how awkward it is - and from your comment clearly you have never tried on the citroen then.

Well, I have a Megane 2 and replaced bulbs on it. It is a according the British the most difficult thing to do!

I meant not disrespect, just taken from the opening OP, I figured you don't service your own car.
 
Does it have to be a car or will a bakkie be ok? Bantam and Corsa Ute is something you should consider.
 
sorry to hijack thread

My sister is looking for a car also for around this price....my options are tazz, getz or atos

but cannot find one with nice low mileage compare to the year

if anyone knows anyone in cpt please do let me know

I usually do service but this Citroen is impossible! They recommend taking out the battery and a few other things when changing the lights which is a bit ridiculous.
Anyway I'm going to be looking at bakkies or any other cars.

i have a 2000 elantra for cheap if anyone is interested,body needs some attention(has a small dent or two nothing major) but its going for +-R33000,i bought it as a work car but dont need it anymore as i now travel with my boss to my new job.:)

Its ideal run around car as its cheap,1.6,aircon and power steering.
 
I was selling my car at 50k ... complete with DVD / GPS Frontloader ... 2006 Daihatsu Sirion 1.3i with 105,000km ... only thing is I have just bought a new car, and it is being traded in to the dealership on Saturday :P

Look at the 2006+ Sirions ... they are good cars, never had a day of trouble (made with Toyota Parts). Although services aren't the cheapest.
