Hi there guys

Basically what the thread title suggests, I am looking at getting a digital camera for around R800. Now I haven't been looking around that much but I have been looking at the Samsung ES30 which I can get for about R600. I'm not too sure about it though as I would prefer to get a Sony brand camera and maybe one that has about 12megapixels? I don't know what to look out for so any tips on that also would be appreciated!

Also I'm planing on getting this memory card for it, any good?

Anyone know of/got any suggestions for me please? :)

At R800, Samsung and Sony are going to be ever so similar. I'd get the Samsung, unless there's a Sony closer to R800. :) Have also always liked them. Do a Google, should be some reviews on the different models in your price range with example pics.

Doubt you'll be wanting to shoot at 12mp, it's a waste of space and you'd need to zoom in on pics to tell a difference. Anything above 6mp IMO is modern/high res enough, generally.

Lens quality is more important. If you can get a Schneider or Zeiss etc. lens (don't think so at your budget) then that'll be much better than high mp.

I fully agree with PostManPat, lens is definitely more important, then MPixels. (at this price point, we shouldn't be arguing much)

For the price of the Samsung ES30, seems a great beginner buy.

One point to remember is that it takes AA's, but this could be seen as a blessing as one always gets AA's wherever you go.

Remember, hold the camera still when shooting and force the flash on when shooting against a light background. Enjoy!

Thank you for the link and tips :)

I think you'll have to go far to beat this:

Samsung ES 13 bundle:
12Mp
4x Optical Zoom
2Gb SD Card

R599
I'm unable to find the specifications for that camera on the Samsung website otherwise not bad, but I'm getting a camera with better features for the same price, the 2GB SD card isn't enough to justify getting it unfortunately, thanks anyway.

Where are you getting it? A 4Gb card is cheap anyway.
