Decent Laptop Brands

I can't remember the model line ups these days but the cheap stuff you buy at incredible connection is crap.

The enterprise aimed laptops are of much higher quality, warranty and price.

Seems you need to spend more these days for equivalent quality from 5 years ago. My kids have 6+ year old hand me down entry level laptops that take a beating and have had no issues and work like they did when they were new.

Rando commercial DRM software that only plays nice with windows (and not VM's) most likely.... or certain pseudo-PDF's that only show up on windows. Or any other annoying dependency.

I have a wootbook, works well.
Not sure how rugged it is for lugging around and dropping it, but they are normally build quite well, as they are gaming spec laptop body.

My GF also has similar usage for her laptop which is less than 2 years old. The hdmi port and one of the USB ports are starting to give trouble.

Meanwhile my 4 year old gaming laptop has zero issues, and my work machine is also going strong.

When I transport and use my laptop I basically treat it as a semi-fragile piece of equipment. I suspect this is why my laptops have lasted longer than hers. Again, not sure what pedantic means but you've either been really unlucky or your version of pedantic isn't what you think it is.

The warantee/support is directly with Lenovo but I agree with being careful buying from evetech.
 
I had a work MSI laptop. It lasted 5 years. It got so hot it discoloured the plastic on top on one spot. That section was actually painful to touch.

I've got a Lenovo work laptop now. 1 year and counting. It seems far better put together. Doesn't overheat like that MSI either.

Huge difference between a consumer grade and business laptop with the same spec.

The ThinkPad will be much more expensive than the cheaper version (whatever that is called) but will essentially last forever.

You get what you pay for, and if you are paying less than about R20-25k you need to be suspicious.

IdeaPad. Utter junk with notoriously high failure rate riveted keyboards...

Pedantic as in it looked brand new - the technician asked me if I had used it yet. Yes everyday for 3 months.

So I learnt now that the consumer level laptops these days are pretty rubbish, and maybe I've had bad luck, but it's 2 from 2. So looking at spending a bit more on either a Thinkbook or Thinkpad range.
Will shop around a bit and lookout for specials.

Just got 4th Thinkpad (T14) as replacement for T470 that survived 1.5 years of high school, and 4.5 years of uni.
It does not want to start up, either battery or switch but will look at it when I have time.
Another T470 and T480 are still working, batteries are iffy but what would you expect after all of those years.
(all were bought second hand as demos or slightly used mostly from carbonite)
 
Lenovo used to be the enduro champs, as many have pointed out.
Could even survive government official abuse.

Nowadays?
They're all flimsy. Would rather get a Dell as their warranty is the best.
Check on dellonline.co.za for better pricing.
 
My Dell Lattitude is still going strong. Has 13th Gen i7, ARC GPU and 32Gb RAM.

Solid construction and no issues. Picked it up second-hand on Carbonite for R19k.
