Deciding on new car, need advice

Thanks Angellus. I'll live to fight another day ! :) To be honest, the Corolla isn't comfortable anymore, the ride is harsh (when I got the car it felt like a luxury car compared to my conquest, now that was harsh) and the fact that the car has no aircon just makes it worse. Buying a second hand Auris, or Corolla 2008/2009 with low millage will be a huge upgrade over what I have in terms of comfort and ride. Sure, its not going to be a speed demon, but like you mentioned, all good things come to those who wait. I think I'll wait another 3 years and then get a second hand Lexus (obviously) but something more up to date, like a 2007-2008.
 
I'm going to be doing almost the same thing The family member who has the IS 250 SE will probably want to sell it in 2 years or so and will likely be 4 years old with 35 000-40 000km on it and since I'm family I can probably get it for quite a bit lower than elsewhere the other bonus is I will know exactly what the car has had done to it and what has happened to it.

Well, you're lucky ! At least you have someone in the family who has one. Family always gets preference over private buyers. That's why I'm going to get a good deal, right ? I'm family ! Heheh...but yeah, Yaris sedan and Auris are good cars so I think I'll be fine and you know, I'll pay the car off quickly so before I know it I'll sell it and get the Lexus.

Do you know about the Auris automatic and how well the paddleshift works in the car ? I have no experience with it but my dad tells me that it has a lag...when using the paddleshift there is a rather big delay between changing gears. I have no idea, but if you know or anyone else knows, experiences would be appreciated.

So I phoned Hippo and got a few insurance quotes on a Toyota corolla 1.6 2008 model, an Auris 2008 and a Ford Fiesta 2009. Man, the Ford Fiesta was the worst at R1100. The Corolla was R800 and the Auris would cost R590 to insure. The guy told me that Ford Fiestas are extremely high risk vehicles since everyone wants them. I couldn't believe the price to insure this car. I mean, there is no difference in price to insure the Fiesta vs a Lexus IS250 ! How could that be ? Why is the Fiesta literally double the price to insure compared to a Toyota Auris ?
 
Would adding a vehicle tracker reduce my premiums substantially ? Anyone have experience with trackers ? Still can't believe the Ford Fiesta cost over R1k to insure. Going for a test drive on the Auris 1.4 RT tomorrow.
 
A tracker might see you gain a R 100.00 saving (not sure) but I would not count on it giving you a substantial discount, best is to enquire from the insurers. Also remember high risk could also point to the amount of claims in regard to accident damage for the Fiesta. In other words, it could be that most (not all) people buying Fiestas do so to drive the daylights out of it, with a high crash rate as a result. Therefore higher risk and higher premiums.
 
That story about the Fiesta sounds very fishy.

Why don't you phone Outsurance and see what they have to say? I have tried Hippo and their various quotes and always come back to Outsurance.

Fitting a Tracker might save you R100 but then you end up having to pay tracker R150 for their unit...it is NOT a once off instalment and off you go...they need to be paid every month!

You should like the Auris, a nicely put together car.

I've phoned a few insurance companies (Outsurance included) and each one lists the Fiesta 1.6 at over R1000 (R1100-1200). The Auris in comparison is R650 but it can come down if the excess is increased. In order to get the Fiesta insurance premium down to a more comfortable number I have to increase the excess considerably (like over R8000 !). I'm not prepared to do that.

The Toyota Corolla is the next most expensive on the list. I just never expected the Fiesta to cost so much. The insurance is a killer on that vehicle.

That is amazing!

I wonder if anyone here has links to Insurance brokers and if they could find out exactly why. I cannot see Ford SA being too charmed to hear that! I'm not a Ford fan, but there is NOTHING about a Fiesta that warrants it being more expensive to insure than an Auris!
 
Drove the 140i Auris. Nice interior, drives nicely and is comfortable. But it has no power. I mean, this is to be expected, but my current 140i Corolla seems a lot more powerful. Putting my foot down just doesn't result in much oomph. The engine is super quiet and it's spacious inside but man, no power. I was very disappointed. Looks like I'll need at least a 1.6 (90 kw) vs the 1.4 (74kw). Funny thing is that my 1.4 Corolla has similar engine power but just feels quicker.

You should drive my 1.5r Impreza - it makes 79kw but is ostensibly even heavier than the Auris. Pap.
 
So the Auris is heavier than the Corolla ? I never did any research either but I just assumed since it was a hatchback that it would be lighter. Oh well, you learn new things every day. : ) Went for another test drive of the 320i and again, I enjoyed it very much. My insurance is cheaper than the Lexus and listen to this guys : I asked about the run flat tires and the cost and he told me that they cost around R1100-1200 each. That's not bad at all. I've heard a few stories where people claim R4-5K each ! So I'm not sure what is going on about that. I asked the rep on a few occasions and told me that run flat tires are not that expensive at all.
 
BCO, I feel your pain. :D If I do go for the Auris it needs to be a 1.6 (90 kw) at least.

Of course he will say that, now go to the tire places and ask the prices and then decide.

Depends on the size of the rims. Also, do not listen to the dealer rather call the Tyre suppliers like SupaQuick etc
 
Huck, once again you are listening to the salesman and not finding out for yourself. Go to Tiger Wheels and price a run flat, you might find that they aren't that cheap.

Run flats are about 30-50% more than the standard
I understand though that there is no obligation to put in runflats on the BMW (in fact overseas models dont have them as standard). You can put std tyres & keep a marie biscuit spare in the boot (or get a repair kit)

I would recommend buying the BMW....it really is a DRIVER'S Car!

Like I said earlier in the thread, I got a 120i and I think I'm converted for life. The drive is awesome, car looks awesome, no worries about service costs, BMW on call 24/7, ridiculously good customer service.

I'd say go for the BMW, negotiate a discount and you're set... :cool:
