Beginning of Sept I was told by Telkom that they'll only be able to give me an indication by Feb 2007 of possible ADSL access. So I went Iburst G3 to replace MyWi. Month to month of course, purchased the modem. Quite happy so far btw. Speeds 700 and up

Now....got a phonecall today...from Telkom. Wanting to confirm conversion/installation to/of a 384k line on Nov 7 :D So I confirmed...can always cancel later if need be. Right now I'm not sure which way to go...the lower latency (hopefully) of ADSL is an important factor overall, but especially gaming wise, if I decide to give my racing games a go online. I don't have a problem using Iburst for work connections, ssh (putty) is all I currently use.

Will probably run both connections for a month or two ($$$ :() to determine whether I should run a combo of the 2 (nice to have backup) with maybe scaling down the G3 to an i-Go and up the 384 to whereever. Or keep Iburst as is (speed is nice and you have a 64k throttle) and go for local only ADSL to address gaming and work.

Any suggestions will be appreciated....

A combo of the two could be interesting. So you would use iBurst for a small amount of international with i-Go, and make the ADSL local only. that could work well, but then there is no 64kb after the cap.

Or you can use iBurst on the 1G as for downloading only, using your 1 gig and then 64kb on international and then still the hub for more downloading? Then how would you use ADSL, with a 30/10 gig local only account and a SAIX cybersmart or Webafrica for international.

I'm not shure if using both will really work out cheaper either way... it just seems very expensive. maby just using two ADSL accounts, one for local another for int, would be better.

Oh, and remember any money to Telkom is money fueling a monopoly, if that really influences you. You might just want the best for your internet.

Very interesting problem.I am in the same position. My experience is that my 512 connection is infinitely more stable in speeds than I burst. However with the lightning storms coming up I am dreading how many times I will go down on DSL and how long Telkom will spend fixing the problem. There are pros and cons on both systems. If you do not suffer from lightning problems I would keep the DSL connection personally.

@ EHV - If I go ADSL local only, I'll stay with Iburst G3. I'm aware of the added cost running both, but at least I'll have backup if my telkom line gives hassles. ADSL will then be used for local gaming and work (me & the wife) and Iburst for the rest.
@placebo - Pretoria does have its fair share of lightning :D

What about downgrading to a G1. That way you get to keep the 64k throttle... either way, you seem to have it down pat.

As a side note - how is TMNations performing on iBurst compared to MyWi? I have had good speeds, etc. but would like your opinion - you certainly play it a lot more than I do these days (so many games, so little time :()

Raith, TMN is lovely over Iburst, with the wife VPN'ing to her work and both the kids PCs busy with Windows updates (Tried that the 1st weekend :D). In the past either she was working or I was playing.

G1 is an option, but then I'll (have to) up ADSL to 512 or 1024 and add 3gb International access. G1 will then be purely for backup purposes, which will be rather expensive at R469.

Sounds like you've got it all worked out. With those speeds, and on M2M, I'd stick with G3 - and a local ADSL account (384k) if I wanted low latency (which I don't - do you?).

Still, it all sounds so expensive...

Telkom is expensive.

It still doesn't make sense to me that you must pay R79 line rental a month, if you're just gonna use it for internet. Then another R199 for the honour of having Telkom as your ISP.

Just doesn't make sense.

If you wanted to pay a lower monthly cost but keep the benefits of G1 over i-Go (lower additional bw costs and a 64k throttle), you could sign a 24mo contract at R389pm.

I have a natural adversity to signing contracts, but R80pm adds up.

I play TM Nations a lot on my iburst, runs like a champ, never had any problems both when I'm uncapped and throttled to 64kb :D

Ja, TMNations ftw! Never knew so many iBursters played it.

I dont think it is much of a test though, because lag doesnt seem to exist on TMN, so it should be playable with any connection. You dont actually interact with hte other cars, you just see them, and whether they are jumpy doesnt affect your gameplay at all.

Yeah, how is it I've never seen any of you (except for Luke)?

Oh, right. I've not played in over a month.

We should set up a local server for iBurst. ;)

[EDIT]
And yet another thread is hijacked...

If you're going to have an ADSL and Iburst account, you might as well just get a G9 unshaped package from Iburst. It's going to cost you R1099.

The G3 package currently costs you R600, and the telkom package is around R600 - R700, right? Do the math, and you'll find out that the G9 package is cheaper, and unshaped, which means it's good for playing games.

Unshaped doesn't imply good for gaming, in my case low latency is important. Iburst's latency isn't bad, but not in the same league as ADSL. It's fine for most of my working requirements, but I don't think it will be good enough for racing

You also have to consider speed. With ADSL, you'll get speeds of up to 384kb/s. With IBurst, you get twice that. Do you think the 384K DSL line is capable of delivering good performance with racing games?

I'm speaking under correction, but the max we can get out of current iBurst technology is 2Mbps?

I would say yes, 384, combined with low latency, should be able do to the job. Haven't checked the ADSL forums though (yet) :)
