Decisions - Iburst & ADSL

I'm speaking under correction, but the max we can get out of current iBurst technology is 2Mbps?

Yes, that's the Max that Iburst can offer. :)

I would say yes, 384, combined with low latency, should be able do to the job. Haven't checked the ADSL forums though (yet) :)

Remember that ADSL isn't always constant. I've heard reports of DSL lines reaching speeds as low as 64kb/s. I wouldn't call that low latency... ;)

latency gets measured in ms, not kb ;) Speed and latency....2 different things

Ja, the main thing for gaming is latency. A 384 connection could easily get 140mb through in an hour, and no game is going to use that much, so it should work. But hosting on a 384 con is a problem, it doesnt work in battle.net. Whereas a good iBurst connection can host 5v5 DOTA games later at night.

I think that actually testing for best results is going to work out best. You already have iBurst, and have ADSL coming soon enough - run conrurrently for a month or 2 and see...

:D That's the plan...

Will probably run both connections for a month or two ($$$ ) to determine whether I should run a combo of the 2 (nice to have backup) with maybe scaling down the G3 to an i-Go and up the 384 to whereever. Or keep Iburst as is (speed is nice and you have a 64k throttle) and go for local only ADSL to address gaming and work.
@ EHV - I don't plan on hosting anything

With alot of people not even reaching anywhere close to the 1mbps how do you think they could ever get up to 2mbps.

1mbps is fast enough for 3gb or even a 9gb cap as with what I have now I could reach my cap within a few hours of the first day of the month with ease.

Just give them some time. I firmly believe that in the following year, IBurst will have more than 50 000 customers. This way, they get more money, and they can improve their base stations. Personally, I think 1mb/s is enough at present. I'm quite happy with my speeds and have never had any real problems with IBurst. :)

They going to have to put up alot more base stations before they can even think of 50,000 customers or we'll all be crawling at 64kbps with saturated towers.;)

Or possibly crawling at 128kb if they up it to 2mb.. theoretically..

But I don think they are completely stupid when it comes to this, they know they need more base stations and they are doing this. Alot of the new users will aslo come from the new areas with new base stations, not exclusively from onto the old towers.

Yes, we know that. Currently IBurst offers up to 1mb/s, but the IBurst technology is capable of reaching 2mb/s. ;)
I very much doubt iBurst will ever get past 1 Mbps.

The iBurst technology was envisaged, designed and engineered by Arraycomm, while Kyocera partnered to provide actual manufacturing. Arraycomm have ceased all development on iBurst, and it doesn't look like Kyocera will be doing any development on their own.

I believe the iBurst technology is at its evolutionary dead end and it survives as a stop gap till wide-spread WiMAX adoption/migration occurs in ~2008/9. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.

Well on the site it says 2mb/s is "already in the pipeline" or something like that.

Thats from the Kyocera site on the iBurst section. So it will be bale to go to 2mb/s, but it will really need alot more than that in the future. but alot of country are taking up iBurst so maby they will se enough money coming in to upgrade the system? No idea either though.. but it works for now in good old SA.

I think thats been on their site from before iBurst arrived in SA. If its as easy as a firmware upgrade, I think they would have done it by now. Suspect hw mods are required on modem or tower or both.

Even if the 2Mb upgrades came, do think it would be worth iBurst SA's investment knowing that most of the wireless world will be moving to standards-based WiMAX?

Agreed, even in its current form Iburst has the legs for at least the next 2-3 years, especially in a country where 384-512 is still the norm.

Ja, thats what I meant when I said they need to go further than 2mb anyway.

lol, but if thats been on their site all along then I dont have much hope..
Funnily enough on Ed's support blog some guy seems convinced that iBurst can go up to 20mb.. well he be disappointed when the 2mb upgrade comes in a year or two.. if it does.
