Hi guys I applied for a vodacom contract for the iPhone 3G over the phone today and they declined it because I "do not have an established Payment history" the guy said its because I dont have many credit accounts,is there anyway I can bypass this?I can afford the contract I dont pay for anything other than a MTN anytime R200 contract which is about 3 months old now.

Catch 22...

I had the same problem. I eventually got a Virgin Money credit card, which was pretty easy. Perhaps if you get that, they might re-consider...

Trick is to start building up a credit history. Otherwise you'll always be stuck in this position - it's a pretty ridiculous catch-22, but not one that's going to go away, regardless of how much bitching and moaning one does...

Thanks guys, lets say I get a credit card and apply with the credit card immediately will it be the same issue?or must I get the credit card, wait a few months then apply?

That realy sucks man I realy want that iPhone 3G thats free on business call,Need to find someone that can help me get it,thanks for all the help guys.

You can have someone sign surety for you. A family member, close friend etc? That's more than likely your only route...

I did that man they still declined it thats why I cudnt understand it!but why didnt they ask for my 3 months bank statements or anything?

I doubt you have any other option apart from going in to the store and reapplying with your bank statements, a payslip and your ID book - the old fashioned way. If you're turned down again, then you're stuffed. If you were turned down with someone signing surety on your behalf then it sounds as if that person signing surety might not have a decent enough credit rating themselves.

Your last option is to have the person signing surety just put the contract in their name instead, but that's a schlep in the long run...

Im gona go in tomorrow with someone who has a respectable credit history to stand as a surety for me and if they decline it,you will be seeing me on the News headlines with a flamethrower in my hands standing in front of a vodashop! Thanks a lot man keep well!

what iphone deal are you looking to get? How much is it a m0nth? 8gb or 16gb?

I reckon because you did it over the phone you got turned down. The processes are more rigid on the phone.

If you actually go into a store, with the payslips etc, i dont think you will have problem.

Yeah I had a similar problem trying to get a cheque account from my bank. Even though I had been with them for many years, I opened a Woolies account made a few small purchases on it and had to wait annother 3/4 months before my cheque account was approved.

It's quite painful :-\
