I am currently looking at building a homelab with a couple of servers and networking gear. Does anyone have any decent old servers available such as Dell PowerEdge R710's?

What area are you in? There's a guy selling some of these on Gumtree in Bellville at the moment. Search for "rack servers" I think you should get to him.

I am in the Pretoria region, will have a look on Gumtree, can maybe arrange for a courier.

Mmm, I'd be cautious about that. I wouldn't personally buy something that I hadn't seen and poked around with to make sure that it's at least working.

Old server stuff is going to be challenging to find replacement parts.

I would recommend against it. I did this a few years and bought a few DL180s, for my VM super lab and other network hardware while I lived in the UK

Let's say the noise they generated drove me nuts. Ended up selling them (wierdly at a profit ) a few weeks later.

Today, rather get a beefy desktop(s) with i7 or whatnot and use virtualization technologies to learn whatever you trying to learn.

I was specifically looking to get something with bays because my linux iso machine is about to reach capacity and NAS'es are expensive as hell. The R710 with 6 bays looked more appealing than forking out 8-9k for a NAS without any drives.

But I can see what you mean - running servers meant for the DC isn't going to be pleasant in my house, maybe one day when I have a dedicated room for it.

I have a IBM BladeCenter H with 13 blades :D but you would need 3phase power

What about something like this if all you need is more storage ?

If you want to study networking/virtualization, pc with 32GB+ ram and ssd's.
Use vmware workstation/virtualbox for virtualization.
Use GNS3 for networking.
Believe me, with today's electricity prices you don't want to run servers at home.

If you do want a server though, I use a couple of HP Proliant Microservers. They can be had on Gumtree for reasonable prices, they run FreeNAS well, and have four hard drive bays so you can put lots of storage in them.
