Hi Guys,

Who would you recommend to use for dedicated hosting? Microsoft solution and must be local.

I have webafrica in mind.

THanks

Afrihost is an option. Depending on whether you want to do any of the management yourself, you could also look at getting a root server, for example a Truserv option from Hetzner and manage it yourself. They will still manage the HW.

If you know nothing about servers you'll have quite a tough time with Web Africa (because they don't know that much either to be honest... they charged my client almost R2k for "disk usage overuse" because of some arb HELM installation they did and some dork found the FTP to it...why have a dedicated solution if you have HELM installed on some other server? anyway)

Aside from that, I might still opt to go for Web Africa due to the huge amounts of bandwidth they give you nowadays (really blows away the competition in my opinion... for now anyway). So if you don't mind the elbow-grease of taking care of the server yourself and expecting mediocre (maybe faulty) hardware being used and want 300gb + bandwidth, go with them. As long as you keep in mind your current and future needs when it comes to server configuration and you know what you're doing you'll be fine. If not, just hound Jeff :) He gets **** done over there.

Also think about location though. Web Africa is in Cape Town whereas Afrihost will be in Johannesburg. WA hosts in Teraco where Afrihost is on the MTN/Hetzner network (AFAIK, think IS too, but IS's datacenter is done by MTN, not sure). If you want good quality hardware and pay the same price you would WA or Afrihost but with 1/10th of the bandwidth, go with Hetzner. They're brilliant at what they do and the turnaround time for support queries are awesome as well.

If you intend to run some sort of mail server on the server you're looking to get I suggest WA for the bandwidth. Anything else I'm more inclined to use Hetzner however the only reason I don't actively use them is because their data center is run by morons (MTN)

I haved used Afrihost on numerous occassions and found them to be very good. I have not had a single minute of downtime in the last 2 years of running dedicated servers with them, and they seem to know what they're doing.
