Good morning,
I have a serious concern and this is that my boss has again deducted medical aid and, pension and UIF contributions from my annual bonus.
Ive noticed it was also done last year and the year before. Nothing before that as a new lady started and is doing our salary payrolls.
How legal is these deductions from my bonus as i was under the impression its only Tax that should be deducted.
Is there anybody that can shed some light please as Im loosing almost R15000- from my bonus this year.
I am employed at a steel foundry in gauteng.
Thanks

Your bonus = 13th cheque ? Only tax should be deducted. It's how it works on my payslip.

Are you saying that you're effectively seeing double deductions for UIF, medical aid and pension on December pay and on bonus? If so, not right, as @HunterNW stated, should only be tax.

Medical aid shouldn't be deducted from the bonus. Tax and UIF (I think) - yes. Pension is strange to deduct, but if they do it's not lost - best chat to HR about it.

Uif probably not as there is an annual cap on it

Thank you for your responses.
I am also under the impression that only tax should be deducted.
It now the 3rd year this is happening. Nobody ever checke and just assumed its all ok. Untill today.

Thanks to everybody.
Have an awesome weekend.

Are you sure it's not just the normal deductions from your normal payslip?

Are you paying 13 medical aid contributions for the year? Or just 12 as you should be?

As per any normal payslip with a bonus your payslip should look something like this.

INCOME

Normal Salary
Bonus
Overtime/Weekend

Deductions

Medical Aid
PAYE/Tax
Pension
Insurance/Life Cover

I strongly suspect you are just reading it wrong.

The deductions would come off your total income for the month and the tax should be the only value to really be higher than in other months due to that additional income.

The only time I would say there is a problem is if you are seeing two line items for medical aid that amounts to a total higher than your normal monthly contribution.

There's probably a good explanation, chat with HR or the person doing the payroll.

Just remember to be greatful that you're getting a bonus (not saying you aren't), I know of so many companies not giving any bonuses or got rid of it completely.

Hi there,

I definitely didn't read anything wrong but thank you.

I am attaching a photo of my December pay slip and second photo of the piece of paper attached to my payslip and bonus cheque.

Maybe have a look and see if I read it wrong.. I've been making 13 payments on everything for the past 3 years apparently..

My advice to everybody that gets a bonus is to check your deductions. Don't just throw you payslip unopened in the drawer.. You might be surprised as so was I.

Oh I am grateful for it . but don't give and then take it again... That's wrong

They've just deducted PAYE from your bonus, and added what's left to your pay. Seems legit.

Not sure if it was mentioned but my pension is a % of my income, therefore when I get a bonus there is automatically an additional portion added to pension.

You are reading it wrong.

There is only a PAYE deduction from the bonus section.

Your screenshots are terrible though. :)
