Defending Apple is never worth the effort

Merry (day after) Christmas everyone! And commiserations to those of you who had to endure tiresome mealtime arguments with distant relatives whom you see at no other time of year. As every year, I tried my best to follow my own advice to be the bigger person and refuse to join in, as hard as it was to shrug off comments about my political leanings or the way I raise my kids.

And this applies to the smaller arguments too, such as the silly ones about technology. If your uncle thinks that Alexa is better than Siri (which is correct) or that Android is better than iOS (unconvincing) or that Windows is better than macOS (absurd) then let him have his little rant. There’s rarely anything to be gained by engaging. Neither of you is going to change your position, and there are much nicer things to talk about.

I know this because, while I don’t consider myself to be an Apple fanboy, I’m very much in an at-risk group. By the very nature of my occupation I often find myself getting drawn into tech-clan disputes, and pretty much always regret it. People comment on my articles, or send me antagonistic tweets (until I deleted the Twitter app from my iPhone, which was the best decision I ever made, by the way), or make jocular remarks when they find out what I do for a living, and bam! The same old tedious debate is up and running, and there’s no way this is ending well for anyone.

So merge this forum section with other IT discussion sections?
 
I mean the entire Dolby thing is testament to this.

Nobody on the Apple side ever goes looking for it. We know we have the best products and we know our lives are all the better for it and therefore don’t need convincing otherwise.

But ****ing hell if some Windows/Android/Xiaomi/Sonoss/Sony super nerd doesn’t come along and want to argue vehemently with you about your decisions to stick with Apple.

And my favourite is always the sheep comment which has never made sense. How are we to the sheep when we are easily the minority?

The sheep idiom is about being the majority who follows the herd. If anything we are the black sheep.

The problem is that people on the Apple side rarely admit their devices are not perfect. People on the other side of the fence usually have the honesty to admit that their devices are not perfect.
That is the iSheep mentality people talk about.

My iPhone11 is hands down the nicest phone I have ever used. It does almost everything better than my Android phones of the past. But it still does things that do not bring me joy.

I don’t know hey I’ve yet to actually witness this where it isn’t on purpose to fit this very trope.

Most people are fully aware of the shortcomings or annoyances but every single one sees it as small fry and inconsequential to the greater overall good.

Loads of **** annoys the crap out of me but none of them enough to shoot myself in the foot and go Android again where everything annoys me.

Same argument I had with Sinbad about why I won’t touch a Tesla until it supports CarPlay because I simply don’t need that lack of uniformity in my life.

As far as I'm concerned the Magic Mouse is the true litmus test. Anyone objecting to the rationally held belief that it's crap is too far gone...

Apple's not perfect, but their ecosystem makes up for a whole lot of lesser foibles.

To what end? Merging Huawei and Android doesn't even make sense these days so why would you want to merge Apple with PC Hardware and Gadgets? Let alone amalgamating them all into one.

I wouldn't even say that is the biggest one. You charge the thing when you don't use your computer. It isn't the worst offender by a longshot.

The real iSheep detectors for me are:

1) The removal of IO ports on their laptops, and replacing MagSafe with USB-C.
2) Their absolutely worthless excuse as to why Lightning was kept on the iPhone. (Now I actually genuinely think it is a better connector than USB-C, but claiming there is a security reason for Lighting is simple BS).
3) Them defending 8GB of ram in their M1 macbooks as being Magic Ram that is equivalent to 16GB of ram

That was annoying - I had to get a magnetic USB-C cable to compensate for it.

The lack of RAM (despite the efficiency of the OS), is definitely a downside.

My lil cousin couldn't play Disney Dreamlight Valley on my iPad 10.2 (2021) because it only had 3Gb and not 4Gb RAM.

Storage is actually quite easy to rectify, you have very decent external SSDs that you can use. But there is nothing you can do for your RAM.

Maybe the fact I moved to a Windows machine for a while during this period made it less of an issue for me but the one size fits all nature of USB-C was great and I never felt I was really missing anything.

Being able to daisy chain one machine into another was also a great benefit when you worked on more than one.

While I do love having MagSafe back on my 14-inch Pro it’s not like I felt it was ever missing.

See this is a big contradiction to the statement above again. Apple took the ports away to push USB-C forward and then everyone wants to hate them for it.

Personally I still have an iPhone 11 and the switch to USB-C which isn’t as universal as it seems annoys the **** out of me. You never quite know what will or won’t work with it.

I got an iPad Pro recently and the USB-C is a pain in my ass because now I have to find a cable for it or plug my old non MagSafe Mac out to charge it. Then you also can’t charge it on any charger like every other device, no it has to be a super ultra high wattage charger.

Same with the Nintendo Switch I borrowed her other day and forgot the power supply. Nope can’t run it off the PS5’s USB-C output it’s not powerful enough. So now I need to use my Apple Charger for this thing.

The entire USB-C thing is just a **** show and I would happily stick with Lightning for everything. They should have made the Macs charge with it and called it a day.

Unless all my Apple devices can switch over to USB-C at once it’s simply an annoyance to me not a benefit. I stand to gain NOTHING from the change.

See I’m not a big fan of paper values but rather real world experience and as such having worked on one of the first M1 8GB’s in the country for just over a year and then getting a 16GB M1 and later a 16GB M1 Pro I can tell you confidently in a real world every day use case all three feel identical.

The 8GB thing simply isn’t an issue unless you have very specific needs which no longer makes you Joe Average so just get what you need but there’s no reason for every other consumer to pay more for it.

This is my real issue with it though, the upgrade prices are insane. I would not care at all if the upgrade prices were semi-decent but there is just no way 8GB extra RAM and 256GB extra storage should cost £400

I miss my MagSafe. 2 haven't bothered me since my Belkin MagSafe charger and 3 has never personally been an issue for me, but then I don't run anything particularly aggressive.

Most people's use cases aren't the same, so what they deem important isn't the same.
