When I first got this phone I put the waterproof thing to the test. Shot a few under water videos of my son. So I know the phone is waterproof. A few months ago after the phone slid of my cars roof and hit the garage floor it developed an intermittent earpiece speaker distortion thing. It was sent in and repaired under warranty. Obviously the phone was opened to do this. Today I was at a social with some friends and a few of us landed up in the pool (caused by one of those drunk idiots that no one really knows). I thought everything should be fine. But a bit later I noticed a moisture build up in the top right hand side of the screen. it eventually went away but the LED indicator is now constantly on and was bouncing between red and green, now it's just red. The phone is working fine though. So what happens if I take it in and they claim water damage? Could dodgy workmanship have stuffed up its waterproof sealing when it went in for repairs?

Even though you could get away with immersing it in water, you're not supposed to. As far as i know it's water resistant, not water proof, and certainly not at any depth.

My motto with my Moto is this : The title of "water resistant" is in fact a safe guard....not a challenge.

The Titanic was supposed to be unsinkable....and if the ice berg did not cause such a long gash...it most likely would have been....but does that mean the captain should go out looking for ice bergs to smash his ship into?

Back on topic though.....If you have insurance on the phone I suggest you claim against it. Excess will likely be higher due to the fact that liquid damage is involved...but when it comes to liquid damage a repair is in most cases fruitless. The phone could very well keep on failing over and over. That is why Vodacom Repair centers will almost always send a liquid damaged phone back BER.

Well, it *was* initially specced to IP67 so, by the specification, watertight to 1m for 30minutes but, it would seem, Motorola retracted the position on account of being wusses.:p The hardware is what it is and what it is is capable of at least being wet, I have:

- tossed mine into the washing-up water in the kitchen (priceless reaction)
- dumped it into a beermug & filled it with water (more than once, Also, funky with the screen on)
- put the screen under running water I forget how many times (I'm big on clearing my grody oil residue off it)
- as recently as last week poured a spot of dishwashing liquid, smooshed it all around and put under running water (was showing (off!):p to someone who just dropped a Nokia in water) to clean it (he was gobsmacked and regretted not knowing about this, heh)
- (once, I am NOT in a hurry to repeat this one) dropped it from up a ladder onto a brick driveway, agonised for the 8 bounces & skitter to a stop ..then picked it up and carried on with life.

Which pretty much leaves only tossing it into a pool (and yes, I'm not (entirely!) stupid, I know to use the shallow end) to round out the water testing suite. :D

...am I using up everyone else's karma with my shenanigans? :erm:

And it is STILL a better device than S-E's frankly half-baked 'Active'

Heya,

If there's water damage they'll replace the phone -no questions asked (Red Bull and Motorola directly.) I know this because I dropped my phone from a mickey mouse height (less than 90cm's) and the lcd cracked. They (Red Bull) only asked if there was water damage or "dirt" damage -I'm not sure about that one either. When I said, the screen was cracked, they simply refused to deal with it and told me that's not covered under the warranty and that I will pay. (Got a quote from a cell repair shop for R1600! Baastids!)
Was also told by Red Bull that they contacted Moto directly to find out whether they would provide me with a new handset. Apparently Moto refused their request -so I was told.
I thought this was BS so I got into contact with Motorola directly. They said there Red Bull does not contact them for handset repairs and that they have no choice in the matter. Ie. Red Bull has the choice to replace the handset or not.
Anyways, long story short, Motorola was more than willing to resolve my issue -and this in less than a week. (Whereas I was battling with Red Bull for like 3 weeks!! LOSERS!)
Anyway, my suggestion would be to take the device back to your service provider and explain to them that water damage occurred AFTER you got the device back from repairs first time round. Nail them with "life proof" and "water resistant." You shouldn't have any problems. If you do, contact Motorola SA directly (those guys are ON THE BALL!).

Hope you get yours sorted. Good luck.

(Oh and BTW : Gave the Defy to the woman and got myself a Galaxy S2. I initially wanted the Defy for its "ruggedness" and therefore sacrificed performance. But after this ordeal I realized that I still need to be super careful with the device. So screw it! I opted for performance instead. Man...what a DIFFERENCE. The Moto is / was still pretty neat, though.)

Thing is when the phone came back from repairs I had this feeling that since its been opened that it might not be water resistant anymore so I kept is well clear of water. So although the moisture buildup on the inside has gone it still works fine, but the led indicator is still on. This social I was at whjere this happened was just an unfortunate mishap. But other people had it worse. 1 iPhone died;) and a BB torch through that incident.

I would still suggest you take it to your service provider. At the end of the day, water gets in...and it's not supposed to, so get it sorted as soon as you can. Next time the phone comes into contact with water -for whatever reason - the whole thing might die. So rather see if you can sort it out now -then at least you know it can take the punch. (Where "punch" = water related damage...and not something physical...because it probably won't be able to handle it. Remember bdt is using up all the "Physical Damage +1 karma" from everyone else's devices. I swear he took mine! :p )

Like with my watch [100meter waterproof]. But only one person in town got the tool to replace the battery and keep it waterproof. If someone else do it, not waterproof.
So is this moto.

This is going to be a long process. Especially since it's Christmas and new years. And MTN aren't the quickest when it comes to repairs. At least I have a Wildfire to tie me over till I get my Defy back.

UPDATE>>>>>>>>>>>

I took the phone in to Autopage on the 19th of December. Got it back on the 12th of Jan. There reply was "Sorry sir it is BER (Beyond Economical Repair) liquid damage" Ok the phone still works fine but the indicator led at the top of the phone stays lit....in red. (it can do multi colours) That is all thats wrong. So I say I will take it up with Motorola. When I got back to work I phone Motorola and got put through to a Bongani who told me to send him a email detailing what happened to the phone and what happened with Autopage. He said he would escalate it for me to someone with some authority. So I sent a mail. Monday morning I got a reply mail. Motorola has agreed to replace the phone for me with a new unit. So Tuesday I went to Motorola in Woodmead to get the new phone. New in its box with all accessories nogal:D

Now that is good service!!
