I need a serious RAM upgrade, currently 512meg, but it's not working so lekker.

I havent opened it yet, so i'm not sure what type of ram i need.
Do I go from 512 to 1gb, or higher?
Based on your experience, what is better?

My processor also seems to be busting a gut, need I upgrade that as well?

Or just go back to XP, which is a pity, because Vista, she's quite nice.

What should my basic spec on the machine be for optimum performance?

thanks in advance...

What proc do you have? Centrino 1.6? It'll always be slow and you'll be lucky if you can upgrade the proc at all or the ram past 1.5GB.

First prize would be to upgrade to 2GB ram

I would do a RAM upgrade to begin with - it's cheap at the moment -- managed to get 2x 1GB sticks of Kingston KVR667D2S5/1G 1024MB DDR2-667 200-pin SO-DIMM's for my D510 from Frontosa last week, and they were only R227 each + VAT... really cheap for 2GB notebook RAM!

It made a huge difference to my D510, and although it's only running XP Pro, it flies now - well, better than before! :D

no, if memory serves, it's the Pentium(R) II Processor at 266 MHz. but i'll check, laptops at home now.

Howard, would you mind sending me a link for your shop?

The more RAM, the better.

But be careful tho - that you don't exceed the constraints of your hardware or software :)

2Gb is a safe bet - for now :)

like i said, not sure.

Howard, i found it, thanks anyway, looks like a nice place.

thanks librarian, definitly gonna do it will report back.

The D600's usually ranged from Intel Pentium M 1.40GHz to 2.00GHz processors

I think you'll need to check your specs on the memory, as the Dell site lists the D600 with the following memory specs:
Double Date Rate (DDR) SDRAM at 266MHz (PC2100); Standard - 128MB; Maximum - 2.0GB; Memory module capacities - 128, 256, 512MB, 1GB

No mention of DDR2-533 or DDR2-667 - may be the older memory modules?
