I am trying to find out info on how the Broadband embedded mini cards in the DELL Laptops work.

Some of the newer cards have an embedded GPS device Specifically the 5720 mini PCI card If you have a look on the DELL US site do a search for the Broadband Cards. Also have a look at the NOVATEL site ( manufacturers of these cards -- EXPEDITE Modules ) NOTE this is not a seperate GPS device -- it is built INTO the broadband card.

As far as I am aware the XPS laptops supplied in SA use the standard VODAFONE 5520 card -- HOWEVER the SA XPS laptops DO have GPS functionality -- using the 5520 card it would appear. ( Can someone confirm this )

SO my question is --does anyone know exactly which cards DELL SA is supplying in the SA Laptops. Which have GPS funtionality -- and how to activate it. DELL claims that this is only available on selected models. Selected by WHOM and WHY ?

The other question has to do with SMS / MMS / Mail client software. The DELL comes with something called a "Broadband Connection Utility" which is part of the driver package. I am NOT impressed with this software. It can only handle short SMS and although it claims to do EMAIL I have yet to find how to use this functionality. You cannot get software from NOVATEL -- you have to go through DELL. WHEN are you going to update this software DELL ? ( This utility also looks different according to which Communications provider the card is attached to ie VODAFONE , VERIZON , AT&T , SPRINT etc etc. VODAFONE is the one SA uses and is the WORST !

So I am looking for an integrated MAIL client for WWAN aka Broadband aka HSDPA. Something that will handle SMS / MMS and regular email. Surely this is not so difficult ? It may cause some ructions in the handheld market. Perhaps economics is the factor holding it back ?

Anyone have any ideas or hard info ?

AAAhhhhh well -- it looks like back to the old story around here of "help-yourself" :(

Vodafone UK have a "dashboard" application specifically for DELL laptops -- BUT it is dated 2006  Wonder if this is any better than the useless standard connection utility that comes with the default DELL drivers ?

There is also what looks like a very useful SOLUTIONS TOOLKIT DVD BEWARE this is a 1.3GB ISO download. I would luv to see it -- but that would be the end of my CAP :(

Perhaps V3G could make this a ZERO RATED download ? Speaking of V3G. I am very impressed with the VODAFONE UK website and what they have there to offer the BUSINESS & ENTERPRISE user. YES even TRAINING !

This is for GINGGS

NOVATEL have an SDK on their website

Also have a look at WebToGo aus Deutschland aus very interesting stuff there.

NOW perhaps someone from DELL or VODACOM can help me with that embedded Broadband / GPS question ? I can see LOTS of applications for this equipment just waiting. Come on VODACOM show me that you are a World class player and not the poor cousin of VODAFONE. Shake up MORE than just your top management -- get rid of all the dead wood.

GPS on DELL 5520 Wireless:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novatel Wireless\NextGenCommon\GPSHWStatus
change from 0 to 1 (use regedit for this).

Restart the software.
