I am trying to find out info on how the Broadband embedded mini cards in the DELL Laptops work.
Some of the newer cards have an embedded GPS device Specifically the 5720 mini PCI card If you have a look on the DELL US site do a search for the Broadband Cards. Also have a look at the NOVATEL site ( manufacturers of these cards -- EXPEDITE Modules ) NOTE this is not a seperate GPS device -- it is built INTO the broadband card.
As far as I am aware the XPS laptops supplied in SA use the standard VODAFONE 5520 card -- HOWEVER the SA XPS laptops DO have GPS functionality -- using the 5520 card it would appear. ( Can someone confirm this )
SO my question is --does anyone know exactly which cards DELL SA is supplying in the SA Laptops. Which have GPS funtionality -- and how to activate it. DELL claims that this is only available on selected models. Selected by WHOM and WHY ?
The other question has to do with SMS / MMS / Mail client software. The DELL comes with something called a "Broadband Connection Utility" which is part of the driver package. I am NOT impressed with this software. It can only handle short SMS and although it claims to do EMAIL I have yet to find how to use this functionality. You cannot get software from NOVATEL -- you have to go through DELL. WHEN are you going to update this software DELL ? ( This utility also looks different according to which Communications provider the card is attached to ie VODAFONE , VERIZON , AT&T , SPRINT etc etc. VODAFONE is the one SA uses and is the WORST !
So I am looking for an integrated MAIL client for WWAN aka Broadband aka HSDPA. Something that will handle SMS / MMS and regular email. Surely this is not so difficult ? It may cause some ructions in the handheld market. Perhaps economics is the factor holding it back ?
Anyone have any ideas or hard info ?
